weaselett: (criminal minds - hotch look)
Today we went to see Hacksaw Ridge it's a good film and worth going to see - but it is gorey (and it looks more physical effects than CGI - just as potential trigger/squick warning)

Last week I did a family session based on a random art idea and it was enjoyed by all (and I got a few parents say 'never thought/seen this done before but it so good' so yay! completely new session that worked)

I have been watching Emerald City - two eps in and it's interesting so far.

Random criminal minds thoughts (yup, I kept watching, because mainly I wanted to see where they go with Tara/Luke/Stephen, sadly too little of them so far :() behind here because spoilers )

It's the funeral this thursday, so I'm driving myself and the boy down - we'll say a kinda goodbye to the house we had all our holidays in as kids, and then that's it. Tis a massive end of an era and really weird.

And we are bossless at work (boss left, not replacement yet) and it's also weird and sad. So weird times all around!

*hugs to all*

Hello to new friends :D

-

So - I am doing Nanowrimo this year - I have the epic project of doom that I have been failing to do for an age (and signed up to do for bigb bangs only to fail and drop out *face palm*) but I am finally motivated to get it done.

This means the next month is going to be plotting and planning out (it's.....bigger than nano size? as a total thing? but I figure using nano to get going is a good plan). I'm casting the OCs (I did not, sadly, actually realize that there are no blind actors/actresses? I knew there were deaf actors/actresses, and a range of other disabled peeps in the industry, but I honestly never knew this :/ - and I never looked before, despite my 'why is auggie played by a seeing guy' mini rant back when covert affairs started)

Let me know if you're taking part as well :)

-

I'm away this weekend (well - friday-tuesday) at a Convention, and visiting museums (because the cheap trains are stupid times, so I am using it to expand it to museums and convention).

Going mostly for exhibitions (Fire of London, sunken cities, clangers!) - might poke other museums other than those three as well - still a few I haven't explored in London!

I am hoping it will cool off a little (I am now into the 'it has been too hot and humid for too long and nose bleeds allllll the time' stage :/ Not fun, espec the random while driving one.)

-
TV-
I am trying to figure out if there is going to be any more George Gently (One of the few tv shows I am actively engaged in enough to watch live/when airs first) - but can find nothing :(

I am excited for The Librarians season three - and I am enjoying Wynonna Earp season one, so season two will be watched (with parents, as they both enjoy 'buffy with a gun') - and there's Luke Cage.

I will probably, in the end, but after it airs, watch season 12 of Criminal Minds (because all the girls and a better racial balance than almost forever). Other stuff - I will be poking for Supergirl to see what it's like, and Conviction, along with a few others shows I may give a go.

Busy Week

weaselett: (leverage - sophie glasses)
Had a crazy week or soooo.

Did two different kids/family sessions last week - and work has been crazy busy. We are going to be up on last years numbers (well, we're open 7 days a week at the mo - so def up on last year's 6.....but still over 200 most days is really good. Over 300 as we've had a good few days recently \o/)

Have seen Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad.

I really enjoyed Star Trek Beyond spoilers behind here )

I have no idea what the new Star Trek series is going to be like (espec as it the lot who were responsible for Into Darkness :S - and it's apparently going to be between Original and TNG? (EDIT: Or Enterprise and Original as it turns out) So kinda between the two parts of Generations? And not focused on the captain, though you know, the others were ensemble?) IDEK - we'll see.

I spent all of Saturday out of the house - we had tickets to Bryan Adams at Lytham Festival - so I visited the wee independent cinema in St Anne's (Lytham St Anne's does not actually exist - there's Lytham, Ansdell, Fairhaven and St Anne's, which semi run into each over, but are separate places /random ;) though they get the Golf Open often enough some of you might have heard of it)

It really cheap and there's only like 35 seats in each screen which is crazy given they get the new releases (like £4 for a ticket v £6.50 at Odeon). It's a little strange and you are close to the screen so neck ache, but a good find.

I enjoyed Suicide Squad spoilers/thoughts behind here )

St Anne's is really nice as well. If you ever visit Blackpool it's worth a little side trip, there are lots of little local stores (with just a few big chains mixed in). It was a bit surreal, driving from Blackpool Airport down the coast, because the Butlins/Pontins is now a housing estate, nestled into the sand dunes (I do not envy those people the hell of trying to have a green garden there!).

I found a good book shop (and got four chalet school books! I am trying to get copies of them all, slowly but surely). Some fabric/craft shops, a few bakeries and a nice little pet shop (and mostly the people were nice - I talked to guy in the book shop and woman in the pet shop who were v friendly). Got a treat ball for the crazy kittens.

Bryan Adams was good. Haven't done that kind of gig before (have done standing only and variety of indoor, but never outdoor standing.) Fun was had and da snarked about me obviously enjoying the crazy backroad driving home.

Am on to the last Temeraire book and will do a 'Temeraire' reaction post when done - because there are thoughts and commentary to be had ;) - Also back to the Chalet School book reading (have fic to write - but will need a beta for that....).

(And in random 'I have totally not been eyeing the behind the scenes pics coming out and internally swearing' - it appears that due to stuff my fav character may be out of the one US show I try to watch as it airs.....dang it. (More annoying because the other person involved isn't nice...so it's like shouldn;t have happened, but you can see how?) *flails a little* ) - Yes I am that person. I mean, generally I watch for specific characters, so like with SGA after Carson and Elizabeth I didn't try to catch up so much, Doyle was totally my main guy in Angel (so heh yeah), so I tend to keep an eye for times when a show might stop having the characters I am invested in. (Because I get invested, and SGA was honest to god painful for teenage me).

I know I'm safe with Elementary mind - but most shows I watch are ensembles. I still haven't watched all of season five of Lost Girl (and it's Faebles convention in.....just over a month? o.O) and I never finished the back half of BSG.......

Stuff

Jul. 24th, 2016 09:20 pm
weaselett: (leverage - sophie glasses)
So - the last three days of work have been...interesting? (We had a theft first day of exhibition which is just typical (nothing old, thankfully, one of the replicas & of the type people went for last time *sighs*) It has been busy and today was the day of the misbehaving teenage boys.

-

Geeky stuff wise - The DC stuff coming out of comic con? WOW. I had hope already for WW, but the trailer bodes well and JL looks like it will be fun.

Marvel.....meh. I want to see Black Panther, I will go see the next GotG and Avengers (depending on release times....Thor 3 might be DVD) - I was already pretty much done with Spiderman, Doctor Strange once we had Benedict announced.

Captain Marvel....urgh. I have ranted soooo much about marvel and how much they suck with the girls. (We never got Janet *cries*). And Brie is....too young? Like, we have no older ladies in main roles, and Carol is meant to be over 30, just on basic 'she's a captain' ness. *sighs*.

Though Luke Cage also looks good - but Netflix wise only Iron Fist was made me hesitate so far.

Annnnnd watched Robot Wars (I remember the original run from when I was wee) - not too bad. Not as much destruction as some, but promising.

-

Debating between Star Trek tomorrow, or next weekend....Might well be next weekend because tomorrow is my only day off until Sat and I have other stuff to doooo.
weaselett: (leverage - sophie glasses)
Sad news the last few days with Victoria Wood (my mother has sent me too many death notices in texts this year, seriously) and Prince. :( It's a shame and both will be missed.

I admit, Victoria Wood is the one I'll notice more, as she was one of the universally liked comedians in the family, so we have lots of random side refences to her in everyday convos (The Anne Widdecombe song and the alt version of brief encounter espec). So sad, and it's only April I really dread what the rest of the year will bring.

US TV seems to be a bit of a mess with ladies, which is frustrating and really disappointing, it's just sooo backwards - and I poked something and discovered that I somehow completely missed Adam Baldwin's involvement with gamergate *head desks* URGH :/

ON the other hand, I wait impatiently for the finale of Criminal Minds.... because yeah the one thing I still keep up on. And waiting for Librarians to come back, as it is campy fun.

-

We now have three kittens. The new little girl is a Maine Coon, ma settled on Lola as her name (yes, because of that song, and Kinky Boots). Will post pictures soon :)
weaselett: (cm - hotch)
(I live - just about....)

So - Criminal Minds fandom these days, is kinda dead - unless there's something about Reid. I have no idea why this happened - and I am saddened by the fact that the only real criminal minds fandom left active are kinda arseholes.

And that the writers are pandering to them.

*Face palms*

I really want to be a bigger part of fandom - but then stupid happens and I just....go back to lurking. *g*

At some point, soon, I will do a massive post. And I will actually respond to overdue stuffs *face palms* - yeah, I have been failing so far this year ;)

Hope you are all well
weaselett: (tw - ianto - perspective)
originally my subject line was going to be a line from the preston version of Cinderella - but then it's much colder and icer now and [livejournal.com profile] charlies_dragon has the post it note note that has the full sentence on ;)

I has received lovely cards from [livejournal.com profile] thinkpink20, [livejournal.com profile] trowel_queen and [livejournal.com profile] flubber2kool *hugs the girlies*.

There has also been snow (more snow than has been seen in the last ten years of living in Lancashire o.O) - and both of the little dogs have now seen, eaten and been defeated by it. Well that and the garlic they retrieved from the vegetable rack - apparently garlic baffles huskies...who knew? Onions on the other hand are only to be used for football, while carrots and potatoes are eaten freely.

cut to save peeps from 'the drama' of my life ;) - and mention of HSM *shudders* )
weaselett: (fraggle rock thinking)
Been considering a few things that I've read/seen discussed a few times in fandom in general, especially in regard to SG-1.

A lot of characters are seen as being 'too perfect' or 'unrealistic' due to things they know/are capable of etc - Sam Carter and Daniel Jackson being the main two that come up.

I understand this to an extent - it's true that characters like Sam and Daniel have overly exaggerated skill sets, have too few flaws etc - but at the same time some people also seem to miss the flaws or the possibility that it's not so outlandish because they see a certain character as a Mary Sue or deliberately modeled to be 'brilliant'

I say this because while I lack a lot of knowledge of Sam's type of work, I know of at least one person who could be considered comparably 'brilliant' to Daniel (though he's attractive - but then he's not on TV) - he was one of my lecturers and he knows an insane amount of stuff, but no one sees him as being 'unrealistic' but then he's real and more tangible.

My point - and question to you all is - is this perception of characters in this way because fictional TV characters, or because we often find it hard to believe that people like that exist?
Is the perception of a lack of flaws because of how we ourselves as viewers see the character - or is it because of our hate/dislike of the character?

more questions and further meta, on characters that aren't actively seen as 'too brilliant' and those that are but we like to ignore.... )

Prompt me!

Pairings

I am a multishipper. I will hold my hand up and admit to that.
I have written pairings I don't like, not as often, but I have done it. I also seem to lack any firm OTP, for any Fandom.

However, [livejournal.com profile] charlies_dragon recently asked me what my all time favourite pairing was so I thought it was time to do another pairing post.

This would be one and only (unless something else happens in this saga *g*) response to the recent LJ dramas.

I had thought, from a few recent posts that all of the paranoia was all just due to another one of 'those' rumours - but apparently it is not so *g*.

I recognise freely that a lot of the events could just be coincidence - and that a number of the deletions were good (and well done to LJ for deleting those particular journals) - but a number weren't.

I have never really ventured into the side of fandom that has been the most effected - that being RPGs, Harry Potter etc - BUT I read things that include these kinds of things (I'm a crime novel girl a lot of the time....not to mention some of the amazing hurt/comfort fics that exist in the SG-1 fandom, one written by someone I used to have contact with which dealt with the subjects in an amazingly sensitive way) I would, personally however never put anything of those particular things in my interests.

continued behind here - to save those not interested )

LOL - yup - i am a lazy bugger - the most I've done this week - despite various impending deadlines? two hours in the library y-day on my dissertation and a page and a half on Bellerophon falling the night before - slight *meep*

I have however now fully discovered a new shiny show - namely heroes - I'm up to the end of episode 12 'Godsend' and battling not to finish watching the reminder today....
I have to say, I am much more taken with this show than I thought I would be, but not by much, as I have always been one for the love of super powers *hangs head*
Being normal sucks! *lol*

The third episodes of House s3 and Shark s1 respectively were good last night - through House wasn't as good as it has been but on the upside the preview for the next episode?? *mini-squee* The only thing that made it feel worse?? The adverts for THAT episode of Grey's *meep* - damn you TPTB!!
I have no doubt it will be a good episode, but it's just *sighs* yeah. I won't be watching it sunday - due to me being behind on Grey's, I got two more tapes from mum y-day, but I don't think they'll run up to last weeks grey's - due to it being CSI, NCIS s3 and Grey's s2 - so I'll be watching it...in a few weeks - maybe when the parents are down in a week. And when I watch it? *eep* why did they have to steal?? why?!?

OH well - shall have to decide on an island (to compare Arran to - that has enough evidence to use for my case) then I can finialise the ebil Research Proposal before bothering da to help me make project work - and then focus on Bellerophon falling....and remember my graphics *nods* must remember graphics....

I don't think the internet, or rather the increased availability of the internet has helped fandom....
Stargate fandom is kinda a scary place at the moment - scarier than it was just a year ago - hell you could say it's scarier than it was two months ago. Some of it's because, yeah, some bad and potentially bad decisions have been made (i.e. outright lying to fans) but really people, do you have to, well, implode is the best description (as are certain parts of the DW fandom...)
Yes - there are certain people who shall remain unnamed - who have started to p me off something awful, but that seems to be the aim now *rolls eyes* why be nice to the fans when you can insight so many of them to such levels?? - but we could ignore them and allow people to have their own opinions. The hate/love is on such an insane level now and it kinda makes me edge even closer to the edge than I was before, when really right now, I was wanting to venture further in *sighs*
I'll admit there are bits of fandom that I have always avoided (INCEST?!?) and there are shows I love, but will never ever venture into the fandom of, because, I think they eat people....
So yeah - the prior to the heavy internet presence fandom was a calmer place and those fandoms that started out as such remain so,(i.e. Star trek, Babylon 5), for the most part - but the more recent fandoms - just - meep.
I think I'll remain where I am - away from the crazed Rose fans/shippers and the lemmings etc - and look forward to next saturday (Smith and Jones!! *squee*) without having to avoid the Martha (who we haven't even met yet people!) hate. *sighs*

*sighs*

I realize that a lot of people out there aren't feeling the same, but personally, it's really starting to get to me when the intelligence seems to go out of a fandom.
Most of the things I watch to feel challenged, not just on intelligence level, there are others levels to it, but lately, that just doesn't seem to be present in all that many shows.

I miss Jonathon Creek - i really do - I loved it when i managed to get it right, especially when it was the person and the way i had guessed by about half through the episode. It didn't bother me that i was right, it was thrilling.
Now however - i seem to be predicting what's going to happen next in way too many things.

this is what happens when i go hunting for Doctor Who fan fiction online. I start spotting the american writers, and blinking in slight confusion at the things that appear from time to time. It happens when i'm readin SGA fics with Carson in as well through, when people over accent or they write him with what could be a welsh, irish or cornish accent, but not scottish. Hell there was one that Carson's speech reminded me of when i was struggling through the accent in 'the secret garden' back in primary school (i got a little cocky, thinking i'd understand it easily. *head desk*), this is a very scary thing *nods*.
But then i keep getting thrown by my american lecturer whenever he refers to the west country as the south-west peninsular, which i guess is a very british thing to get confused by - lol.
The odd thing is, torchwood fic doesn't seem to carry the same issues as the doctor who ones, or at least, not that i've seen so far.
the thing that confused me most today was someone's use of teacakes...that were being handed out and put in people's pockets. *blinks* i love teacakes, but i would never put one in my pocket. Hell most won't fit. *pauses, getting the sudden urge to have a teacake, all hot and buttery....* It's not a big thing, not even a huge thing, and it doesn't effect the fic at all, it just throws me for a second as i try to figure out the logistics in my head.
not being american however - i don't know if there are similar moments when peeps like me try to write things set in america involving american people - i can only really comment on what i know myself!!
also - am slightly depressed, having failed to find cheeselets ANYWHERE (xmas without Cheeselets - it's wrong!) and as i had my contract at work extended, but it's only two weeks, and i'm going home at the beginning of those two weeks, so i have to decline the offer, (or get fired for being a pain in the ass) and am really really really nervous and guilty about it *sighs* am useless, but i want to see the mob again. Especially now that a certain husky puppy had taken it upon herself to start barking at the phone everytime i phone and seemingly at no other point.
Oh well such is life. lol.

Yup - am sadly disillusioned by Stargate these days - but charlies_dragon keeps poking at me - so have been keeping up. Only thing is...the more i hear.... *sighs....head desk*
oh well. lol. always got the good old days to look back at. It's just a little sad how generally disillusioned i've become when it comes to TV. Especially being on this side of the pond.
Firefly...Tru Calling...Angel....the flagging originality of either Stargate show... *sighs* tis a sad sad state. Still - i have Doctor Who and Torchwood (*hugs RTD*) - thank god. Good old British tele. lol.
Anyhoo - back to the fics....

No work on TTTB yet *ducks head* but am going to work on it!! honest....blame the da - asking for my address (he really needs to get a notebook...) and then informing me that i'll be getting something from amazon in the next few days - that i can't open until my b-day - it's like, temptation in the evilest form!! but, it's only a little over a week......*headesk*
sleep last night - much disturbed - need a mute button for drunken housemates at 4 in the morning - and the police that were called out to deal with them *head desk* but the house is clean...ish now. *sigh*
been watching Babylon 5 season one (been soooo long - jeff, how i missed thee) with james and sci-fi hesistant trowel-queen *giggles* she's now starting to have a thing for sci-fi - through she wanted to rewatch the four eps from today to make sure she hadn't missed anything - tis weird for me- eight years, but i remember some of the later stuff, so i keep sniggering as gaps are filled.....yep, am tragic follow for a ramble on me and tv )

*sigh*

Watched the new Doctor Who saturday (didn't update sooner...because....ummmm...) was good, thing is, nobody else likes it that i know (james doesn't like rose - because she's a chav - he's waiting for the TARDIS to get a racing strip *rolls eyes*) apart from Neil, that i know of - and it can be very difficult to get sane convo out of him for more than a few minutes.....am looking forward to nect week still anyhoo - 'New Earth' was a lot better than the 'Christmas Invasion' - but still getting used to another new Doctor - which i suppose is fair enough considering. Also, doctor who has got to be the only fandom that can get away with changing who plays a main character - because it's canon - lol - but then it always has been - tis such an old fandom now - problem is for youngsters like me, finding the early stuff to watch is near impossbile - partly due to the Beeb losing/reusing/burning things. But on the up side, they don't cancel things *glares at fox* half way through seasons. In fact, i can't actually off the top of my head think of anything any channel (non-cable/sat) here that's canceled anything like that. lol.
Will ne working on TTTB this week - i will...

Finally saw Ice Age: The meltdown today - *squee* - soooo good - it will be added to the collection when it comes out
In other news - the bunnies are active but not a one of them is sitting long enough for me to write anything *glares* - but am going to really really try.
Have my exam timetable *shudders* four exams two weeks four days 12 hours. On the up side we do have them right at the begining of the exam period - which means i'm free from the 24nd ish of may until august - two months and a bit to write and, ummm, not work unless i can manage to pull some hours in the paper shop - which will be scary if i do - most of the kids in the village hate me - so yeah working in the paper shop they all buy stuff from - maybe not the best thing....but it would be money.
Also - house hunting still ongoing - i think james has his heart set on just the two of us renting/letting or living on his own while me - i want a house!! damnit!! and parents are still considering so - meh - why rent when you can have security? James quite honestly is annoying me - he's sooooo meh about the whole thing - am starting to feel like a third leg/fifth wheel. Grrrrrr.
Little note - it's been annoying me for a while now - all the sam/jack fics that have summaries like - Daniel's dead, S/J - or - it's daniel's birthday sam/jack - *blinks* am i the only one who wonders why they even bother with the 'daniel' bit? it isn't just the sam/jack shippers, i've seen slashers and Dan/Jan fics with such summaries it's just that at the moment it's mostly S/J stuff. It may sound evil, but if i was going to write something that is a shipfest (it has been considered...still is...) i wouldn't do a daniel/janet that revolves around the summary of 'Jack's dead, Jan/Dan' it just seems off somehow - i mean deathfics should be about the death - there may be pairings - but they don't normally set in the summary - they're a side note - same when the summary mentions a birthday - i might say it's het or slash - but not who - birthdays can be romantic but most of the time, it's about the person's who's birthday it is. sorry - just had to get it off my chest - anyone who wants to throw things feel free - i'm afraid it's just something that pokes at me from time to time.

Just a quick update - haven't been able to sign on for a little while *glares* but finally managed it now - *sigh* - nothing written, but inspiration has struck and am going to try really really hard to get the prologue finished this weekend - then move onto the first part......
Eight below is out soon!!! Wooo!! saw the trailer on wed when me and lisa went to the cinema - looks so good - the dogs are soooooo damn pretty - my tala and Nahani are just as pretty - *squee* - am going to see it - everybody should - share the huskey love!!! lol.
Also - Ice age 2!!! seeing it wednesday, so nobody who's seen it already spoil it = parents will porb do that anyway. lol.
But don't know if it can beat Were-rabbit - god i loved that film!! also - realised that there is a whole new layer to the comedy when you get all the PNE jokes - first three i didn't even know a lancastrian - now i live there, well when i'm not here....- the extras, *squee* every footballer named i know (in passing) even if it's just by the names of the streets the statiums are on. lol. yeah PNE and Blackpool both. lol.
The rabbits rocked. I want one of those rabbits *stares dreamily* but not as much as i want a Shawn. LOL. Anybody who hasn't seen the extras mini's should - really i mean it - and the one with shawn in? sooooo very true. i know soooo many people who i have watched doing that kinda thing. lol.
