We didn't get flooded (a fact that the village celebrated with drinks and hotpot) but the main road west is unpassable. We had a few hours without power, but versus a lot of other places we got off lightly (the next village along with barely passable, but people have managed to check in with them).

Lancaster - I have no idea - the annoying thing is, there is soooo little being said in the media, and with the loss of power? There's really few ways that words can get out to us outside of the area.

The travel websites don't list any of the closed roads (I poked them this morning due to the main road not being listed - we were having an entertaining morning of how many people can ignore three road closed signs - eventually we got a cop stationed there, who just got abuse - said cops are being provided with caffiene (and hotpot)) - there's mention of bits on the news, but nowhere near the breadth.

Lancaster now seems to have power back (heard from colleague thankfully) but like us has no mobile signal. They were pretty close completely cut off, which is something near unheard of. (You could get in if you were south bound on the M6 this morning, by lunch that whole junction opened, and now I think south is passable).

I really really hope the rain scheduled for the next few days is light. I hope people in effected areas are safe.

Sorry I have been relatively quiet of late, and have still failed to complete the posting of california pics *face palms*

Things have been busy (work wise stuff has been, and still is, crazy - loads of jobs are going, and until last week I didn't know if I was going to be one of them, we have at least a year's stay though thankfully).
I had Bill Bailey, then Jasper Carrott, then a weekend away with parental and dogs. Today was attempting to book tickets for Adele, which was foiled by a powercut an hour into my queueing time *face palms*. It was unusual that it was an entire village powercut, not just our phase (took out the mobile mast as well, which is still dead *heh*)

So lots of real life stuffs - thankfully none of the flood warning have been for us so far this year (hope those in the areas that have had it bad in the last three storms are ok *hugs*)

I have a cards post here for anyone who wants a holiday card (or random Blackpool postcard - I am open to send you cards/flat message objects of your choice). Let me know if a specific holiday is desired.

I failed at nano for the like, fourth year? But I might manage my 100 books read in a year.

I have seen Mockingjay (I did the crazy midnight viewing as it was the only way to see them one after the other - it was worth it) - xmas will see a re-read of the books.

I hope those who celebrate had a good thanksgiving - and people have had good birthdays (next year I will actually manage to do birthday wishes posts, I hope)

Been quiet for a little while - currently have the evil throat not cold of doom (it's not quite a head cold - so it's annoying, because I still want to eat and do stuff, but throat is sore and I sound all raspy :/)

I do not get to see Age of Ultron until sunday morning (working wed-sat - so sadly feel just wrong) - so am going to be avoiding the internet, so as not to get spoiled (beyond 'it was good')

Watched the latest episode of Criminal Minds - heh - MGG's episodes are always promoted as being scary and thrilling, and yeah nope. They are always the worst of the 'this would totally happen, not' episodes and I never find them scary. Given her goes for atmospheric and all, it should be, but it just falls flat for me. *shrugs*

It at least had some basis in something (which I have read about, and which is disturbing - am sad they didn't do a proper episode dealing with it :/)

At some point I will update my reading challenge post - given that I am at 34/100 books read - and am fairly sure have managed a good few of the list.

Am however failing at word count for camp nano *glares at word doc*

I have not been around as much as I would like to be - this is due to havig a dead and a semi dead computer (I am currently modding the Leverage Reverse Big Bang via my mobile *face palms*) - I need to get these things fixed, but it's finding someone good. Hopefully this will occur soon *crosses fingers*

This last week has been a bit crazy for me - I had all the revision to do for an interview and my car theory test - I got stressed out to all hell by work, and haven't been feeling great - then thursday night, the night before the interview, I reread my 'you have an interview' email, and saw 'you need to do a 5 minute presentation'......which I had failed to spot before

I managed to create one - which didn't suck - and was minus computer aspects - but I didn't get the job (no one did as it turns out - and I was told it will be readvertised if I want to try again - I missed out some of the essentials, as I had not realised they were meant to be gleamed from the presentation....so yeah) - I have no actual idea if I want to apply again (it was my second interview for a job, with the same three people - so feeling a little meh about it).

Plus side - I have passed my Theory - now I just need to find a driving instructor

After my theory - I went to see The Hunger Games (it was my 'if you get through this week, you go to the cinema' deal with myself *g*)

Hunger Games film thoughts behind here - spoilers the film and for the later books )

Hopefully I'll be around more soon *smishes you all*

That was the closing question of monday's profiling class. (the answer - very few - and most of them, there was a reason for the murder).

This week was 'bring the details of a serial offender to class and we'll discuss' - didn't really venture outside the better known ones (two american - plus a few British - we kinda have 'less' serial killers, though it's more that we have less well known well documented ones).

It continues to be interesting (and a bit scary - one girl, who wants to do criminology then go into the police - was in the year under me at high school, and someow remembered me.....well remembered me as of this week, when we talked. Oh and I continue to freak people with my knowledge and recall. My memory, which I've never though of as 'brilliant', seems to beat a lot of people's *blushes*

Also, I amuse our lecturer, considering the looks he kept giving me everytime I had a 'actually, there was this' during the mini group discussion (and I got stares from all four of the other members of my group - because I know that water is a good dumping ground and that DNA actually isn't magic. (girl who went to my high school - said the green river killer was silly dumping in a river, because of course the DNA would survive, and I was like o.O - I then had to do the 'I'm an archaeologist, which is were some of this comes from, some of my old lecturers dig crime scenes for the police' - and then there was 'doesn't archaeology have something to do with buildings *face palm*)

It's definitely been worth it so far *nods*

Weird conversations are had with ma still - she was alone in her and da's first house, in the area where 'The Fox' (not the CM unsub - the british criminal) was active, so my grandmother took her dog on the train and various buses to get to ma, so that she had protection *pets the grandmother* - (there's a list forming of 'criminal who were active near us' and 'things we have been victims of' - fortunately no one in my family has been murdered yet....just most other things *face palm*)

-

In other news, I am officially the owner of one of the puppies. Who is actually mine, completely, I shall be paying for her food, and her vet bills and everything. I'll post pictures at some point (I hope to manage a good picture of her crazy eye - she's a bi eye, but her 'brown' eye.....is weird, the top quarter is still blue, then it's green either side of the blue that bleeds into the bottom half that is brown. *heh*)

-

And saw some of last night's Midsummer Murders, was un-impressed (attempted rape....occurring on screen, but the dude didn't get called on it, but the police man arresting him - the list was 'murder and attempted murder' *mutters*)

Criminal Minds....behind here to save peeps from spoilers )

Hope you're all well - sorry I've not been around much - am a bit undead between work, class, being ill and puppies *g*
weaselett: (cm - hotch)
So work is still occurring (I have a contract, as a paid member of staff, till december at present, so you know, it'll still be occurring for a little while ;)) - getting used to what I'm doing now (I changed areas, and overseers). But it's nice, getting up and going somewhere every day, even if I get a little o.O from all the human contact.

Profiling class - week one was interesting. I'm kinda amused by the fact that the two main references, are two of the books I got out the library (Holmes and Holmes for american - David Canter for British). It's getting it in my head, because reading the books I was like 'am I understanding this right?' and I've not done so bad. Other people in the class aren't bad (two who may get on my nerves a little - one of whom, considering her reasons for doing it, makes me want to head desk a bit).

Stuff learned:

Profiling = semi educated guessing.

Top down - profiling as done by the FBI in real life - where they base it off what they've learned from real life caught criminals - we had a mini discussion of the pros and cons of it. (Personal bias is a big part of it - it's meant to be objective, but because the interviewer goes in with an opinion, and uses their opinion with what they learned from the interview, it's actually more subjective).

Bottom up - profiling as done by David Canter aka the british way. This is where you work from everyone up to your suspect - working through stuff i.e. who would have a tow rope in their car? - taking anything that's at the scene and working out what type of person would have or do those things.

We did more on the US top down, next week we'll be doing the uk version ;) - we spent most of the time coming up with our victim (murder - unsurprisingly - and teacher was gleeful because we came up with points that make sense, unlike the random stuff he's had before). We're profiling our killer as we go. (You need a LOT of information to get a profile working. Not DNA and such, but other things that seem small, but aren't. Our bullet points of the crime actually raised more 'questions we need to know the answer to' then it produced 'things we know from this'. It's interesting to me, after writing case fic, and still working on coming up with more, because it's pretty much what I've been doing. I don't go in with the unsub in my head, I go in with the victim and crime in my head. I'm discovering the unsub along with the CM team - yeah, it's a weird ass way to write ;))

It;s made me want to watch Cracker even more as well (British show, from the 1990s about a profiler) - but it's getting hold of it. I may end up buying it....

-

Shows this week - still need to watch Lost Girl and Haven - have watched Castle and Criminal Minds, and half of Terra Nova.

Castle is still working better for me than Criminal Minds (it's interesting, cos they both started from a similar stand point, from the situations of the last season, but I think Castle is working it more fluidly, it still feels like Castle. Criminal Minds, I'm kinda, well, this is the cue for an lj cut ;))

spoilers lie beneath for Criminal Minds, 7x02 )

IN other news - I shall be away from LJ for three days - as it is Vampire Ball 2 weekend. No Eliza, sadly though :/ - still it should be fun and it'll be nice to see the lovely [livejournal.com profile] badfalcon in person again after a good while ;)

Hope you all have a good weekend :)
weaselett: (cm - garcia smile)
So I had a very busy month and am now trying to make up for it - tomorrow will be my day of filling [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking requests, which I am currently making notes on, while sitting on my bed using my shiny new netbook aka Garcia (who will get linux at some point, but first I have to get hold of it....before windows 7 drives me insane with it's strange glitches and inability to shut down because 'a programme is still running' despite me having closed everything - plus the random cursor wandering while I'm typing is rather annoying...windows, stop reminding me why I don't like you very much)

So I am alive, but I've been busy - I will be around more as of friday through, when I shall work on getting caught up with everything.

*huggles peeps* I hope you all had nice holidays :)

No picspam - sorry! it will be amended, but likely I will actually start next week - in all honesty I had forgotten how hard it can be for me to actually get to do anything when I'm here - and how much ma dislikes me being on the computer *sighs*

Also - I brilliantly saved everything on my computer rather than my hard drive, so the stuff I have done is not accessible until I find/move stuff and can set up my computer downstairs.

We're also a bit more limited at the mo as we ended up having to take one of the puppy's back in as the people who bought her can't keep her due to various things and that means we have to watch the other four and make sure they play nice (huskies, when in a group, are VERY pack like - so she's having to figure out where she stands in the pack - lots of dominance play is occurring).

In other news, I have to sort out to go to the doctors - woke up to a nose bleed this morning, then felt sick most of the day (and had another mini nose bleed *sighs*) - but I have to see a specific doctor (I prefer women doctors, and one of ours made me cry last year and didn't help at all, so I have to see if I can get one of the other two women. it's fun.

But things should, hopefully, settle in the next week so I will be around more, through I have a lot of work to do with art and finishing my OC Big Bang and getting it edited (I made 15000 and sent it in with an outline for the rest of it).

Hope all is good with everyone else *hugs*

I'm working on my [livejournal.com profile] oc_bigbang fic so fairly busy.

My picspams will start in full next monday (it gives me enough time to make a few of them so that there will be one everyday for a while :))

So, if you want to vote on what picspams you want go here and fill out the poll at the end of the leverage picspam :)

Hope everything is well with everyone :)

I'm back in cardiff and I have been informed via letter that I passed the first part of the masters degree, now I just have to pass the other (dissertation o.O)

I also got hold of my copy of the latest issue of the Torchwood magazine, and all I can say is GDL is awesome (the comic he's written, it is of the muchly good and it's actually a published, can be considered 'canon' in a way, source of glee (seriously, the ending? and the last thing he says to rhys *squeals*, well more what ianto says to rhys, which is kinda amazing as it works for both of the major in progress torchwood fics \o/)) - anyone who hasn't yet? you should go read *nods*

I just need to decide now what I am going to do on July 9th (I may go down the bay anyway, but this is more of a 'do I want to go to the blue gillespie gig' than anything) - and get all of the work I have to do done. I also need to catch up with stuff (Leverage and Doctor Who mainly).

Ok, so I will do a major update at some point later this coming week, edit my icons (zomg I need some happy ianto icons, and icons to go with upcoming fics, leverage icons and.....yeah) with some pictures from my two weeks in the wilds of south west scotland, I hope all is good with you all, and if it isn't *HUGS*

I am being absolutely terrible with my last assignment, aka the Ancient Warfare essay - I said I was aiming for the friday just gone, then decided to hand it in today, but I have yet to write it up in full. This is what happens when I have floating deadlines for academic stuff :S

I've done pretty much all the reading for it that I can - the issue is, there's a key book that I need to read, which I have on reserve at the uni library, that is now almost a week overdue. I am not particularly impressed.

On the other hand, this is a first draft (it is a very strange concept for me, I mean, it's only last year that I started doing first drafts of fics, meaning actual proper first drafts that got altered beyond the beta notes before they became a final draft. I've never had a first draft hand in thing for an essay. o.O)

So, my aim is hand in the first draft tomo (am so doing an all nighter tonight *g*) along with the other assignment, which I have finished and that has been sat in my bag for a little while (it's due this friday - I am early *gasp*) - then work on the second draft from friday onwards, with the intention of handing that in next friday, regardless of whether I have had the notes back on the first draft by then (mainly as I have no idea when the actual final deadline is, besides 'mid may...ish') - plus, the lecturer who is meant to mark it for me has done himself an injury, so I have no idea if he will even be able to mark anything. *head desk*

So yes, complicatedness.

But hey, reading Caesar's the Gallic War multiple times (I need to find a different translation for working on the second draft, cos the person who did this translation translated 'virtus' which is unhelpful, as it has no actual set translation. Also, it is very important part of any argument regarding portrayal of enemies. *sighs*) - but yes, Karl Urban's voice in my head as I read it. I want him to do an audio book of it. I would be very happy. *g*

Anyhoo - once this essay is done that's it. Just me and the dissertation. \o/

AND fieldtrip on thursday. Also, have to bother lecturers to see if they'll give me references for an application (job starting october - dissertation has to be done by 11th sept - so damn near perfect potentially).

*sighs*

Ok - so - my internet and googlemail have issues with one another apparently *g* - if you email me/respond to any comments I make and I don't answer, it's because I'm still not able to get to my googlemail account *pouts*

Also - I fail at editing (I have spent an insane amount of time editing one bit, then going on facebook to play scrabble with random people/watching Threshold (OMG!BRENT! *coughs*)....oophs?) it will get done before I go to sleep though *nods*

Big news at current - Tahnee (younger of the two girl huskies) is pregnant (I do not get to see this for myself - but mother has promised photos) and due mid-march, so come easter I plan to run off home and spend two weeks squeeing over mini!puppies, oh and finally getting my eyes tested and hopefully going to see 'How to train your dragon' (I have not been to the cinema in a while - one because it was snowing when I was at home - two because the idea of going to the cinema alone to watch kids films is kinda o.O I may make an attempt this weekend, in an effort to avoid doing reading (it's reading week - I have done no reading....or anything really BAD WEASEL - I foresee a few hours in the arts and social sciences library tomo))

so in short PUPPIES!
that is all ;)

And just as we thought we were through with the excessive amounts of snow....it starts snowing again

at least this time we don't absolutely have to go out - and it's come after the girls have gotten home safe

but still ZOMG SNOW
weaselett: (tw - ianto - perspective)
originally my subject line was going to be a line from the preston version of Cinderella - but then it's much colder and icer now and [livejournal.com profile] charlies_dragon has the post it note note that has the full sentence on ;)

I has received lovely cards from [livejournal.com profile] thinkpink20, [livejournal.com profile] trowel_queen and [livejournal.com profile] flubber2kool *hugs the girlies*.

There has also been snow (more snow than has been seen in the last ten years of living in Lancashire o.O) - and both of the little dogs have now seen, eaten and been defeated by it. Well that and the garlic they retrieved from the vegetable rack - apparently garlic baffles huskies...who knew? Onions on the other hand are only to be used for football, while carrots and potatoes are eaten freely.

cut to save peeps from 'the drama' of my life ;) - and mention of HSM *shudders* )
weaselett: (tm - evy - reading)
OKay - so I have barely been around of recent - initially this was on account of having nothing to say/being too busy editing fic.

Now however, it is on account of OMGWFTBBQ as Cardiff University decided to give me a place on the MA Archaeology course but only give me a weeks notice. *head desk*

I have enroled now (the 'you have an unconditional place' email came through last monday - enrolment was this monday - I spent friday-tuesday in cardiff with [livejournal.com profile] charlies_dragon as company) BUT I have yet to find somewhere to live.

Which is obviously, something of an issue. Hopefully *crosses fingers* this shall be resolved, along with a possible issue with modules choices.

I am also scared as hell by the impending year - Masters is taught though seminars, in very small groups and OMG it is scary to me right now. *breathes*

But yes - I am still alive just a bit stressed and o.O

:)
weaselett: (tw - ianto - listening)
So I have absolutely none of my Tardis big bang fic done yet (I have plans - but no word count) *scuffs foot* I'm getting there though - just need to do some more research....

The girl!ianto fic is doing better though (even if I got to 8500words then threw up my hands and decided to give in and go back to the beginning and write the EPIC version, because it would work better - yes my brain is crazy)

Am almost all caught up with Leverage season 1 (which is just FUN) - Am impatiently waiting for the next episode of Legend of the Seeker (which ROCKS - it's my favourite new show - to the point I've started reading the books it's based on - the sword of truth series by terry goodkind) - and Supernatural season 4 *dies* it's interesting - but at the same time me and the bro are waiting for the main storyline to appear heavily in an episode again

also - am avoiding Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5 like woah - started watching - but have stalled - and I'll probably have to go back and watch all of season 4 to get into it again.

AND Dollhouse - seen the pilot - am interested - but not sure - shall see how it progresses.

I am also reading 1984 at the moment (along with other things - 'The Graveyard Book' by Neil Gaiman? *loves* - also I have stone circles books *hugs tightly*) it is fairly heavy and the language throws me at times - but it's interesting thus far *nods*

Hope peeps are all good :)

I had a really fun weekend *nods* even if I did get groped by Rex Buckland Neil Roberts, like pretty much everyone else *g*

It was lovely to get to see [livejournal.com profile] flubber2kool (who got kissed by BamBam ;)) and [livejournal.com profile] fififolle (yay! for you and your peeps winning the costume comp - your costumes were really good :D)
Also - nice to meet a tonne of new people including [livejournal.com profile] morbid_sparks and [livejournal.com profile] lovely_steph89 *hugs new friends* :D welcome to the crazy ;)

Much fun was had - though poor Kavan was still a little ill. Paul wore the kilt again *yay* - Chuck was still lovely (unsurprisingly *loves*) - Chris is really tall and BamBam was a lot of fun! Oh - and Neil was crazy *nods solemnly* anyone know if that petition for him to be the next doctor has appeared as requested?

I'll post some pictures tomo or friday - once I get a chance to get the pictures off my camera.

--

I got home late monday and got savaged by the mob - Lakota has also grown a full three inches in length - he's going to be a big boy by the time he's full grown! And ignored by the cats (as always - unless I'm bringing food or offering warmth *g*) - the fish are also still crazy *nods*

Am also presently considering whether or not to do [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang - it'll be torchwood if I do - but we'll see.

-
weaselett: (ds - dief/ray)
So I'm still alive - though the laptop remains dead (because I'm a wimp and I can't find the disk I need - mainly though because I'm a wimp and keep remembering just how much music is on there and don't want to wipe it by accident *g*)

I do however have deadlines *eep* (and a very late [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree fic *hangs head*) - though after next week I have a break and time to consider whether I really want to attempt nano this year

I have internet access now though - slightly more than before - as I have claimed rights on the parents computer :) which has a much more comfortable chair - plus it's dad's fault I don't have said comfortable chair or internet on my computer sooooo.... seems fair? ;)

Am thus far loving Supernatural Season 4 - still considering a costume for pegasus (though I've done the necessary sketches and fabric searches for both possibles) - and am happily making my way though 'the chronicles of ancient darkness' series by Michelle Paver (a book a day thus far - though we only have 1-3 in the house - so will be finding 4 5 tomo) which is really good *nods* - people should go find and read :)

Am, also being slowly eaten by a crazed husky puppy who lives up to the nickname 'chewie' more every day even if ma doesn't like us calling her that :D

So I've been back from [livejournal.com profile] charlies_dragon's for a few days now - but I was recovering from the coach journey....honest :)

Okay - so Ten Inch Hero rocked, was wayyyyy better than some things I've gone to see at the cinema with ma (who, incidentally, demanded to know when it would be out on general release - only for me to tell her it won't be - I think I shall have to get a hold of a dvd somehow sometime...) - but yes, I has much love for the film *nods*

Now however, I'm back to job hunting and writing fic (I have my assignment for [livejournal.com profile] sg_rarepairings now *yay* and [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree is due soon *eep*) - am also making pretty jewellery :D

Oh - and torchwood peeps on the friend's list?? If you haven't listened to it yet, the radio play 'Lost Souls' can be found here select wednesday, it'll be available until this coming wednesday (17th). - it's fun, just ignore the muchly squicky science *nods*

Never volunteer to take a dog out for a run every morning - especially if the dog in question is a husky. Two mornings in a row now - though on the up side there's none of the beeping you get later in the day and it does seem to be helping her calm down - so worth it, kinda, even if it reminds me how sadly unfit I am these days *g*

I did finish 'Breaking Dawn' and I liked it - not as much as the others - but I didn't hate it, it took a while to get into though. I have also heard about the Midnight Sun situation *winces* I can understand SMeyer's point of view as someone she trusts has betrayed that trust - and as far as the possibly over emotional reaction goes - dude, she's pregnant - no it's not an excuse, it's the truth (personal experience with pregnant people - sometimes the emotions run very high). The wank regarding BD and this should be avoided like a dangerous man eating thing *nods*

Anyhoo - I had fun down south - avoided the banker uncle (who says archaeology's boring o.0) - and got to see Mamma mia! and Wicked - both of which being very good (Mamma mia! is much better as the stage version than the film *nods*). Didn't get to Sutton Hoo though, oh well.

Have also now seen Hellboy 2 :D - tis good *nods*

And I made Vanilla and coconut cakes *mmmmmm* ;D
