due South

There really isn't any other episodes of any TV show that hit as damn hard as Victoria's secret.

We have a new puppy (white husky *heh*) - I found due south on freeview to watch in the kitchen while minding the terror, innocently thinking yay due south.

AND OF COURSE it's Victoria's Secret.

Fraser's confession story. Sarah Maclachlan. THE WHOLE STRUCTURE. THE FEELS.

If you've never seen it, it's a defining character studt set of two episodes, and if you care about the character it will BREAK YOU.

AND the show remembered it. There was a third episode following up, and references later.

Just, due south and leverage. The two shows that just. Went hard, character focused while still having good plots. *gasps*

So, to spare you all, this is going to be behind a cut. Basically, this is going to be me rambling about the shows that I like, and ensembles. The ones that work, the ones that don't; why they work and when they don't. Mainly, these shows are ensemble or focus on two characters.

Shows discussed ,even if only briefly: Andromeda, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Castle, Criminal Minds, Dark Angel, due South, Firefly, Jonathan Creek, Leverage, Numb3rs, Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, Star Trek (all of them ;)), Torchwood, Xena

(note before hand - added now, because I have actually reread - and am paranoid, and don't want this meta/ramble to sound all knowing - it's all my opinion, and what works for me - I know a lot of things don't work for me, but work for other people and vice versa - I am reminded of that a lot when watching stuff with my family.
So, what I say under the cut? It's all my opinion, on what works for me - I may be wrong, you might disagree with me, and that's fine. I just wanted to put this out there. Feel free to throw things at me if you disagree.)

Ok - so after the last few weeks (it's been that long *wow*) with RTD stuff and the beginning of the SGU promo stuff (oh, SG verse producers/writers, your fail in public amuses me so, you win at offending fans, congrats) I have decided to share some favourite TV shows, that as they have now finished, are awesome and will not bite you in the ass.

due South

If you never watched this show? You missed so so much awesome (ok, so i have mixed feelings on season 3/4, but it has some kick ass moments so I forgive.) If you haven't seen and can't find on the net, I offer my DVDs (though, if I don't get them back? I am hunting you down)

Also, a side note, due South was driven by fans, it only got picked up again each year because of it's fans (in the end it was funded by the Biritsh and French). That said, it never, that I know, folded to fan pressure. Partly because it was a different time.

top ten reasons to watch this show )

Firefly

Yeah, I know, pretty much everyone has seen Firefyl haven't they? It still stands though.
For me it beats out Angel and Buffy, it beats Dollhouse as well.

If you haven't seen this show? You need to find someone with the DVDs. If the pilot doesn't grab you? Watch 'Jaynestown'.

Top five reason why you should watch Firefly )

Other shows that I love:
Dark Angel - It was only two season and they were two very different seasons in tone, but it was good. Stand out episodes: Hit a Sista Back, The Berrisford Agenda, Borrowed Time

Shows I would love to include in this list:
Tru Calling, it has some brilliant moments, but anyone who has seen the six episodes of season two that exist? You will know why I don't often point people to it. You're given so many questions, so much interesting and you never get answers. Damn fox.

Castle, but season two has yet to air so I can't promise no ass biting. *g*. Season One, however, is worth a ook, if you like humour and crime drama, this may be your show. Plus bonus: good strong female characters and Nathan Fillion.

If you have any shows you want to point me to - point away - I'm always intersted in new shiny things :)

Been considering a few things that I've read/seen discussed a few times in fandom in general, especially in regard to SG-1.

A lot of characters are seen as being 'too perfect' or 'unrealistic' due to things they know/are capable of etc - Sam Carter and Daniel Jackson being the main two that come up.

I understand this to an extent - it's true that characters like Sam and Daniel have overly exaggerated skill sets, have too few flaws etc - but at the same time some people also seem to miss the flaws or the possibility that it's not so outlandish because they see a certain character as a Mary Sue or deliberately modeled to be 'brilliant'

I say this because while I lack a lot of knowledge of Sam's type of work, I know of at least one person who could be considered comparably 'brilliant' to Daniel (though he's attractive - but then he's not on TV) - he was one of my lecturers and he knows an insane amount of stuff, but no one sees him as being 'unrealistic' but then he's real and more tangible.

My point - and question to you all is - is this perception of characters in this way because fictional TV characters, or because we often find it hard to believe that people like that exist?
Is the perception of a lack of flaws because of how we ourselves as viewers see the character - or is it because of our hate/dislike of the character?

more questions and further meta, on characters that aren't actively seen as 'too brilliant' and those that are but we like to ignore.... )

Due South - Benton Fraser. *guh* I really did miss this show. lol. Also - the star spottage - i suddenly realise where i save these people for the first time.
Anyhoo - am now going back to the watching - i have many episodes left to watch.
