I am a multishipper. I will hold my hand up and admit to that.
I have written pairings I don't like, not as often, but I have done it. I also seem to lack any firm OTP, for any Fandom.
However,
charlies_dragon recently asked me what my all time favourite pairing was so I thought it was time to do another pairing post.
I do much to my shame seem to default to a het pairing setting (as anyone who has ever read a certain one of my fics will know *g*) which used to lead me to genderbend a character to make the pairing seem *right* - this is partly due to the environment I've been brought up in, and partly due to me wanting some pairings to have kids. And when I want people to have kids it tends to mean biological kids.
In recent years however I have been doing my hardest to work myself out of this, and it seems to have worked :D. Even if I still love my genderbenders, they aren't just an excuse for babies! anymore.
I like writing different pairings because it allows me to explore the different possibilities and situations.
For example Daniel and Jack didn't meet until just before the Abydos Mission, while Daniel and Carson meet at university, long before Carson was involved in the Atlantis expedition.
The relationships are also very different. Daniel and Jack are complete opposites who somehow work and have a relationship based around shared experiences and trust as equals. Yes Jack is very defensive of Daniel but Daniel is also very defensive of Jack. They play off each other very well, but they would never get married/consider a civil partnership, they would always be the old married couple, best friends/lovers. not needing to confirm it. Plus they have both been in 'traditional' marriages before. They also most likely wouldn't consider having kids. At least this is how I see it.
Carson and Daniel however have some things in common as well as having differences. They didn't meet through work and their relationship wasn't built on shared experiences. They trust each other but they spent their time doing very different things, it's very unlikely that they would ever end up in the same place, working in the same office as it were. Daniel is very protective of Carson, while Carson is always concerned about Daniel. They would get married/consider a civil partnership, but it wouldn't be because they need confirmation, it would just be because it felt like the 'next step'. They would also consider adopting/have a very close relationship with friends/relatives children.
Both of the above are ideas I have in my head about ways the two example relationships would go. They aren't the ONLY way they could, but the point is that every character is different and different qualities to a relationship.
I also love crossover/AU pairings, because it can bring a whole different world/set of circumstances into a relationship. If you pair Daniel with Faith (BTVS/ATS) or Zoe (Firefly) you have to explain how he deals with their world, and they his, if they do at all. Similarly, if you have an AU in which Daniel was in command of Atlantis instead of Elizabeth then his relationship with Carson would be very different. It allows you to attack a relationship from a completely different angle.
As shown in the above Meta, Daniel Jackson is my favourite person to pair off, which is mainly because he's the first character that I ever wrote, that I ever pinned down in my head. He's my comfort zone *g*.
He's also the easiest to use when throwing a person into different 'alien' worlds. He's proved in canon that he's a very open person. Jack O'Neill on the other hand, is not especially agreeable with such things. Or at least my Jack muse isn't *g*. The same holds true for poor Carson. He really isn't the most adventurous of people.
I also have an interesting lack of Femslash pairings. I like some, but for the most part they don't attract me as much as Slash pairings seem to *g*. A big part of this is because I find it difficult to write them. It's not because I hate them (I'm a girl who likes girls and boys so yeah - no problem there!) but I think it's more because they are very rarely visible in the canon of the shows that I like. Only BTVS, ATS, Firefly, XTWP and DA have ever really played in those sandboxes, and even then in some cases it's more subtext.
Okay, so now for my favourite and least favourite pairings.
My one and only OTP - Evie/Rick from the Mummy films. These two were made for each other, much better together than apart *nods*
The one other pairing that comes close to this is Will/Elizabeth in POTC, but due to Keira, it kinda falls over. When I look at the pairing as written and intended, I love them, they were soul mates, but when I look at it on screen?? Keira!Elizabeth would so have gone off with Jack instead of waiting...if he'd been willing *g*
Daniel/Jack - Up until season 8 ish - I loved this pairing - but then the Sam/Jack started being throw at me and I wanted to curl up in a corner and hide until the went away. Early Jack/Daniel is brilliant, and very appealing, however as time has gone by, it lost a little bit of it's appeal. (though The Shroud made the bunny squeal a little.).
Jack/Elizabeth - as the Daniel/Jack bunny calmed down I warmed very quickly to this pairing, especially after Season 3 of SGA. They would make a very good couple, as they would be very good for one another. That hug in Return *sighs happily*
Daniel/Carson - they met on screen *nods* and I do love this pairing. It's my very own pet, especially in the face of the fact that I am the only person to have written it. EVER. It's scary when faced with all the pairings who never met on screen (Teal'c/Teyla, as cool as it would be, they NEVER met *sighs*). They would be very god for one another, and it is now a rather firm part of my personnel canon for Carson that Daniel was the one who made him agree to take part in the Atlantis expedition, whether they were in a relationship or not.
Max/Logan - I loved this pairing, I really did. Spent a lot of time wishing that they could touch. The dream sequences?? They killed me, seriously. Logan made Max a better person, and Max gave Logan a reason to keep going and stay strong.
Kaylee/Simon - I don't really have slash pairings for Firefly. I like the idea of them, but I love Kaylee/Simon more. *sorry*
The whole build up, how useless Simon was in his attempts to make Kaylee see/let her know how much he loved her, while she crushed over him so openly *bounces* - I loved Zoe's comment in The Message. I loved the way this pairing went in the film.
I really need to write it....
Daniel/Faith - my ultimate dark/light pairing - one which I have the bunnies and the plans to write, but keep not. Mainly due to the fact that I really need to rewatch all of the episodes with Faith. So yeah, eventually 'Inspired' will be finished and shared with the 'world'.
To me Daniel would be the perfect man for Faith. It takes a lot for him to see something as unforgivable and he would be very willing to help/let her continue her quest for redemption. She'd have someone with 'less' issues (unlike Robin - how had serious issues when it came to slayers) and who would be willing to stand by her, whatever.
Sam/Jack - I just can't see this pairing working for more than a few months. Sam has NEVER called Jack Jack without it sounding awkward. It's always Carter and Sir. Always the subordinate and the Superior. They don't have a relationship anything like the kind that they both have with Daniel. They don't have an equal ground. She always find it hard to question him, he always finds it hard not to command her.
It would be destructive. They make good friends. Very good friends.
Sam/Rodney - Another destructive pairing. The sad thing is, it COULD have worked, the problem is, in canon, whenever Sam is around Rodney he regresses to evil!Rodney, and she acts like a child. As shown by the way Sam treats AU!Rodney in 'The Road Not Taken' it could work, but the writers just seem able to do that with canon rodney and sam. It's sad, but it means that I much prefer Sam/Rodney friendship.
And so ends the meta :D - if you wanna know how I feel bout any other pairings drop me a comment and I'll let you know!
