I started with the intention of blogging more post leaving old work and starting uni - but somehow I have managed to do the opposite?

Sorry about that.

To be fair, I think half of it is that I am also meant to be doing a MA Reflective Journal blog....which I have not done either (partly because they wanted us to use wix - and it turns out I strongly dislike and object to the formatting and set up of wix.....)

I will be trying to post more from now on.

For now, three films I've seen since I last posted, spoiler free:

Charlie's Angels - I enjoyed it, and am said it didn't do so well. It has a fun sense of humour, a variety of ladies, supporting each other in their own ways, and a romance wasn't the central theme/plot.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker - eh, it wans't great, it wasn't terrible. They clearly had notes from how Last Jedi was recieved and tried to make everyone happy (with typical terrible LGBT try from disney - they really need to just cut two versions of a movie, the plot works in both, but there are extra little moments with leads being LGBT that with a slight tweak can be edited to look platonic to fit that market disney always wants to please).

Birds of Prey - I enjoyed it, it's a little oddly paced, but it works - again lovely range of ladies, all different with different ways of supporting each other and no central romance!

And with that, I shall go back to sewing, as I have a market stall next weekend *eep*

Busy Week

Had a crazy week or soooo.

Did two different kids/family sessions last week - and work has been crazy busy. We are going to be up on last years numbers (well, we're open 7 days a week at the mo - so def up on last year's 6.....but still over 200 most days is really good. Over 300 as we've had a good few days recently \o/)

Have seen Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad.

I really enjoyed Star Trek Beyond spoilers behind here )

I have no idea what the new Star Trek series is going to be like (espec as it the lot who were responsible for Into Darkness :S - and it's apparently going to be between Original and TNG? (EDIT: Or Enterprise and Original as it turns out) So kinda between the two parts of Generations? And not focused on the captain, though you know, the others were ensemble?) IDEK - we'll see.

I spent all of Saturday out of the house - we had tickets to Bryan Adams at Lytham Festival - so I visited the wee independent cinema in St Anne's (Lytham St Anne's does not actually exist - there's Lytham, Ansdell, Fairhaven and St Anne's, which semi run into each over, but are separate places /random ;) though they get the Golf Open often enough some of you might have heard of it)

It really cheap and there's only like 35 seats in each screen which is crazy given they get the new releases (like £4 for a ticket v £6.50 at Odeon). It's a little strange and you are close to the screen so neck ache, but a good find.

I enjoyed Suicide Squad spoilers/thoughts behind here )

St Anne's is really nice as well. If you ever visit Blackpool it's worth a little side trip, there are lots of little local stores (with just a few big chains mixed in). It was a bit surreal, driving from Blackpool Airport down the coast, because the Butlins/Pontins is now a housing estate, nestled into the sand dunes (I do not envy those people the hell of trying to have a green garden there!).

I found a good book shop (and got four chalet school books! I am trying to get copies of them all, slowly but surely). Some fabric/craft shops, a few bakeries and a nice little pet shop (and mostly the people were nice - I talked to guy in the book shop and woman in the pet shop who were v friendly). Got a treat ball for the crazy kittens.

Bryan Adams was good. Haven't done that kind of gig before (have done standing only and variety of indoor, but never outdoor standing.) Fun was had and da snarked about me obviously enjoying the crazy backroad driving home.

Am on to the last Temeraire book and will do a 'Temeraire' reaction post when done - because there are thoughts and commentary to be had ;) - Also back to the Chalet School book reading (have fic to write - but will need a beta for that....).

(And in random 'I have totally not been eyeing the behind the scenes pics coming out and internally swearing' - it appears that due to stuff my fav character may be out of the one US show I try to watch as it airs.....dang it. (More annoying because the other person involved isn't nice...so it's like shouldn;t have happened, but you can see how?) *flails a little* ) - Yes I am that person. I mean, generally I watch for specific characters, so like with SGA after Carson and Elizabeth I didn't try to catch up so much, Doyle was totally my main guy in Angel (so heh yeah), so I tend to keep an eye for times when a show might stop having the characters I am invested in. (Because I get invested, and SGA was honest to god painful for teenage me).

I know I'm safe with Elementary mind - but most shows I watch are ensembles. I still haven't watched all of season five of Lost Girl (and it's Faebles convention in.....just over a month? o.O) and I never finished the back half of BSG.......

Stuff

So - the last three days of work have been...interesting? (We had a theft first day of exhibition which is just typical (nothing old, thankfully, one of the replicas & of the type people went for last time *sighs*) It has been busy and today was the day of the misbehaving teenage boys.

-

Geeky stuff wise - The DC stuff coming out of comic con? WOW. I had hope already for WW, but the trailer bodes well and JL looks like it will be fun.

Marvel.....meh. I want to see Black Panther, I will go see the next GotG and Avengers (depending on release times....Thor 3 might be DVD) - I was already pretty much done with Spiderman, Doctor Strange once we had Benedict announced.

Captain Marvel....urgh. I have ranted soooo much about marvel and how much they suck with the girls. (We never got Janet *cries*). And Brie is....too young? Like, we have no older ladies in main roles, and Carol is meant to be over 30, just on basic 'she's a captain' ness. *sighs*.

Though Luke Cage also looks good - but Netflix wise only Iron Fist was made me hesitate so far.

Annnnnd watched Robot Wars (I remember the original run from when I was wee) - not too bad. Not as much destruction as some, but promising.

-

Debating between Star Trek tomorrow, or next weekend....Might well be next weekend because tomorrow is my only day off until Sat and I have other stuff to doooo.

Brief

Went to see Ghostbusters with Ma - it was good and totally worth seeing \o/ (it was loads of fun - though we both agreed that the men folk of the house would not have liked it :/)

I have a dead arm - had blood drawn for 'are you allergic to latex' test. Got asked if on blood thinners, had massive allergic to plasters suck over it and she did it so badly my arm ACHES. URGH.

I have been a real grown adult and emailed asking if people will be my references. And with the questions about the PhD

Probably going to see Star Trek....and Suicie Squad. I have not been to the cinema this often close together in a long while.

Everything behind a cut - to save you all from spoilers and length - this my reaction as straight after as poss - and before reading anyone else's.

SPOILERS BEHIND HERE FOR AGE OF ULTRON - and probably unpopular opinions? Oh and long... )

Guardians

So I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy - it was amazing. I am really close to being sure it's the best of the marvel films so far (but the trailers are just *sighs* - I was going to see it pre trailers, the trailers made me pause - then I went anyway, and hell yes).

It's a fun film, it's an engaging film, it's got an awesome soundtrack, and there's emotion. It's balanced as well, you don't get the weird humour then action jolt thing that existed with Iron Man 3 at points. It introduces the guardians, and introduces their backgrounds, basically doing what it took four films to do with avengers...and there are three named, have main parts women (plus two named women with passing roles). And a raccoon. And Groot. Groot is very important.

On the downside - it isn't worth waiting for the post credit bit. It really isn't.

I have also seen How to Train Your Dragon 2 *loves* - the two best films in ages (and HTTYD films win for showing disabled people being useful, zomg, even if they are less balanced on other things).

Films

So - today I went to see 12 Years a Slave with mum (I had lieu to use - so I had short work day)

That is a film that is worth seeing. It really is (I cried...and flinched). It's designed to do a certain thing, and does it well. It's different from the other films with a similar theme, but for good reason. It's not perfect, but damn, it deserves appreciation for being unforgiving in it's narrative choice. (It worries me, as it always has, but many of the attitudes shown still exist, they're just directed at different things now :/)

Mum thought it was good - but could have been better - her main reason? Roots did it better.
I am now finally going to do what I kept saying I was going to do, and am buying a copy of Roots so I can watch it. (I know it had an impact on mum, because she remembered, without prompting, the title and content).

On the other hand - I went to see American Hustle last weekend. Not worth it. The only good things for me where Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Rohm's characters. I honestly can't see why that film got the awards/nominations it has.
