Title: A Million Miles of Sky and Time
Author: [livejournal.com profile] weaselett
Rating: PG
Warnings/Spoilers: No real spoilers for B5 or SGA
Word Count: 1,967
Summary: Weirder than your average day in the Pegasus Galaxy
Author's Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] brasslizard hopefully this fulfils what was asked for :) sorry it took so long!
Okay, so I may have spent a slightly obsessive amount of time trying to make this fic fit the canon of both shows and researching things *coughs*. Information was used from various sources including wikipedia, b5 tech and babtech online, though I failed to re-find a reference for a comparison I wanted to include, but hopefully it works without *crosses fingers*. Any errors are my own.
You don’t have to have seen Babylon 5 at any point to read this fic – or at least I hope so *g* - but you will have to have seen Stargate Atlantis. Technically set during s3 - but generally could be taken anywhere from mid-s2.
Unbeta'd - so any mistakes just let me know :)

I now have a paid account *grins* and my pegasus 4 ticket is booked *crosses fingers it's a first 300* So am happy :)

Now I just have to find/make more icons....

Also - Have now seen all of season 1 of Dexter, the finale of SGA season 4 and watched a random BBC programme on Silbury Hill (the most random monument - even if it is the biggest manmade hill in europe).

Work continues on the group stuff but *crosses fingers again* - it's scary, only three months before my BSc is done (*hopes*) or at least third year exams are *g*

After, well no, while watching 'The Kindred Part Two' I was struck by a few bunnies, the biggest of which I actually decided had to be written. This small fic, in it's two forms, is the first and shorter, of the two fics I ended up writing (still working on the other one) the second will appear at some point later this week, hopefully.

Title: one of the best [gen verison]

Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: HUGE spoilers for The Kindred Part Two so turn back now if you haven't seen it yet.

Summary: Extended scene - includes a line of dialogue direct from the episode.
Author's Notes: This started as a large fic idea, then became a stand alone, then I decided to do two different versions - the implied slash version can be found here.

Been considering a few things that I've read/seen discussed a few times in fandom in general, especially in regard to SG-1.

A lot of characters are seen as being 'too perfect' or 'unrealistic' due to things they know/are capable of etc - Sam Carter and Daniel Jackson being the main two that come up.

I understand this to an extent - it's true that characters like Sam and Daniel have overly exaggerated skill sets, have too few flaws etc - but at the same time some people also seem to miss the flaws or the possibility that it's not so outlandish because they see a certain character as a Mary Sue or deliberately modeled to be 'brilliant'

I say this because while I lack a lot of knowledge of Sam's type of work, I know of at least one person who could be considered comparably 'brilliant' to Daniel (though he's attractive - but then he's not on TV) - he was one of my lecturers and he knows an insane amount of stuff, but no one sees him as being 'unrealistic' but then he's real and more tangible.

My point - and question to you all is - is this perception of characters in this way because fictional TV characters, or because we often find it hard to believe that people like that exist?
Is the perception of a lack of flaws because of how we ourselves as viewers see the character - or is it because of our hate/dislike of the character?

more questions and further meta, on characters that aren't actively seen as 'too brilliant' and those that are but we like to ignore.... )

I wasn't going to do this - but current RL events have me wanting to.

Behind the cut are spoilers for both 'Adrift' and 'Lifeline' - so be warned.

Okay so if you haven't read this fic At the hour when we are trembling by frostfire - you are seriously missing something brilliant.

It's SGA/SG-1, it's an apocofic, it's long and it's NC-17 - but it's just sooooo good.

It has some funny moments and some really gut-wrenching moments - it also manages to keep both Daniel and John in character the whole way through - and it has definitely sold me on this pairing. It was one that before I was a bit cautious of (it so often just doesn't work), but this well written it is so clear and acceptable. (so much so that I'm kinda hoping there'll be more..*blushes*)

Really worth reading when you get time :D
weaselett: (heroes *hugs*)
So [livejournal.com profile] charlies_dragon and I have created ourselves a whole new crack :D
Basically - after watching the most recent episode of Heroes I ended up asking my dear friend who from the Stargate universe she thought would fit the characters/powers - and boy did we come up with some odd answers!!

Behind the Cut are 18 icons - the first - I have a feeling - in a collection of them - representing some of the possibles....
Not all of them were ones that we came up with - but a lot are.
My personal favourite is Daniel/Niki. :D
There are also two banners (both of which are 800 x 350)

Can anyone remember how you get out onto the balcony?? I can't remember if it's changed or not since season 1 (my single lonely DVD being s1 and all of s2 and s3 being on the working but not accessible external hard drive)

I ask due to a certain part of the fic I'm working on at the moment has two of the guys on the balcony and I was trying to work out how they get out there....and from what was seen on 'Pegasus Project' you don't take an easily visible route out there...

any help would be much appreciated!

thanks x

To break from the editing and continuation of the Carson/Daniel fic to check on SGA fandom - then blinks, backs away and runs back to the fic
I shall leave the crazy be *nods*

A big congrats to the peeps at savecarsonbeckett.com on their victory! It's good to see that all that hard work has paid off for them.

Nevertheless - Stargate Atlanis season four still lies on the back heap of things I want to see....due to a certain other thing that the back half of season 3 gave to us. And - yeah Joe?? I'm hoping....really hoping that the hint isn't what I'm seeing....

But - yay! for the victory! Two/three episodes! *wants to hug paul*

I don't think the internet, or rather the increased availability of the internet has helped fandom....
Stargate fandom is kinda a scary place at the moment - scarier than it was just a year ago - hell you could say it's scarier than it was two months ago. Some of it's because, yeah, some bad and potentially bad decisions have been made (i.e. outright lying to fans) but really people, do you have to, well, implode is the best description (as are certain parts of the DW fandom...)
Yes - there are certain people who shall remain unnamed - who have started to p me off something awful, but that seems to be the aim now *rolls eyes* why be nice to the fans when you can insight so many of them to such levels?? - but we could ignore them and allow people to have their own opinions. The hate/love is on such an insane level now and it kinda makes me edge even closer to the edge than I was before, when really right now, I was wanting to venture further in *sighs*
I'll admit there are bits of fandom that I have always avoided (INCEST?!?) and there are shows I love, but will never ever venture into the fandom of, because, I think they eat people....
So yeah - the prior to the heavy internet presence fandom was a calmer place and those fandoms that started out as such remain so,(i.e. Star trek, Babylon 5), for the most part - but the more recent fandoms - just - meep.
I think I'll remain where I am - away from the crazed Rose fans/shippers and the lemmings etc - and look forward to next saturday (Smith and Jones!! *squee*) without having to avoid the Martha (who we haven't even met yet people!) hate. *sighs*

The RAF

Mar. 17th, 2007 12:05 am
weaselett: (Danny)
OK - so this has been a little while coming - but I just felt the sudden need to post this now.

For all those Fan fiction writers (and you know, TPTB if they're around) who have been wondering - no, the RAF is not the same as the USAF. They don't even have the same ranks.

I had to say this, because, I have seen fics with RAF officers that somehow, mysteriously, have ranks that don't exist......and notice I say officers - there is some overlap - but there's so little that it's chance if said people manage to get it right - more so in fics where they have one accurate rank and six non. (I know that the RAF are rare - but I've seen it)

The worst thing? It's not even like it's HARD to check these things - all they need to do is go on wiki or do a google search.

I admit that I can't name or order the ranks off the top of my head - but then I was never expected to - plus I always thought of my da as an engineer while he was in the RAF, fact is he was a Technician (only officers are classed as engineers...despite the fact that most of the work on the aircraft is done by the Technicians).

Another thing - for anyone planning to write an RAF character - they all have slightly odd senses of humour - not to mention British.

Also - this is a minor thing - that I doubt/hope has never come up in fanon (I tend to wince and gag before I get too far in once I find the rank wrong...) - the planes are all different from the american ones.....I hope to God everyone knows this, but I have a dreadful feeling there are people who don't....

Basically - in my opinion - as with a lot of things - people should research this stuff before they start/write the damn fic. They shouldn't get lazy/think that the rules are the same everywhere - cos they ain't. Hell, the regulations aren't even the same!!

Okay - so - having got that out of my system - should anyone be considering writing such a character - I would be very happy to help out - if I get stuck I can always throw questions at my Da (who has some very funny and very interesting stories - and also had a bad habit of insulting officers wives *head desk*), my best friend, my housemate (an officer's son - air traffic controller) or hell, the brother (who is presently in the stages of getting into the force himself - ground crew). So yeah - I have contacts.

Am battling with timelining for the Carson/Daniel fic - and OMG - it's damn hard!!
If anyone has/knows of a good, full timeline for SG-1 and SGA - that relates between the two?? Point me that way, cos, *meep* it's a whole lotta mind field *nods*

I know that for the whole Rising/S8 bit - canon went on crack where any form of timeline is concerned - I have made my decisions regarding that particular period of time (doing my best not to screw canon SG-1 too much *g*) - but for the more recent stuff (I can say where Pegasus Project fits in SGA canon, I know the SG-1 eps that Critical Mass has to be before...) I have very little idea and the more I look the harder it is to timeline *g* (and the more s10 eps that air...*meep*).

So yeah - any help - suggestions - throw 'em my way.

Also - not relevant for this particular fic - but may be for later installments/ [profile] sg_pegasus - if anyone can guide me on the right path as far as what Carson's medical training would have been like (have an idea of present practices- and I can always bribe the Mam for info on how the nurses of Carson's age group where trained) I would be eternally grateful for a little guidance.
weaselett: (rodney)
A few of the fics I've found recently that really should be read:

The shadow over Chatsworth by Martha - on Wraithbait - It's a SGA/SG-1 cross and it's Gen, so no pairings to really be spoken of - set during S3 and s10 respectively - Rodney and Daniel together....and beautifully written - what more needs to be said?? I'd say more - but it would spoil the fic - just go read and enjoy.

X by Trinityofone - which can be found here: http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/415236.html - It's SGA with a tiny bit of SG-1 - Set in an AU and is a completely different type of crossover - if you love X-men? hell even if you don't - this should be read - it's brilliant. Also - you may need to read it twice to pick up on everything.

The 'Small boy, big city' series by Catsmeow - which can be found at the Alpha Gate - It's a pre-series SG-1 series about Daniel when he was a kid - it's fantastically sweet and really deserves a look see.

And that's all for now - I just felt the need to share!
