Ok - so after the last few weeks (it's been that long *wow*) with RTD stuff and the beginning of the SGU promo stuff (oh, SG verse producers/writers, your fail in public amuses me so, you win at offending fans, congrats) I have decided to share some favourite TV shows, that as they have now finished, are awesome and will not bite you in the ass.
due South
If you never watched this show? You missed so so much awesome (ok, so i have mixed feelings on season 3/4, but it has some kick ass moments so I forgive.) If you haven't seen and can't find on the net, I offer my DVDs (though, if I don't get them back? I am hunting you down)
Also, a side note, due South was driven by fans, it only got picked up again each year because of it's fans (in the end it was funded by the Biritsh and French). That said, it never, that I know, folded to fan pressure. Partly because it was a different time.
One. Victoria's Secret Part One and Two: these episodes? They still make me cry - they are drama at it's best.
Two. Benton Fraiser is made of awesome sauce. *g* He is brilliantly written and so totally out of his depth but unaware of it at times. If you like Data or Ianto Jones? You will adore Benton.
Three. Diefenbaker. The dog owns the world. He eats junk food and is deaf, but determined as hell. There are two episodes thatr revolve around him, they both rock.
Four. The relationships. They are real and provide the push for almost all of the drama. There are these little touches that make you tear up, if you watch all the way though from season 1 to the end of the first ep of season 3, I dare you not to squeal at the end scene. Nothing is ever forgotten, well almost nothing. All injuries and emotional progress carries forward. if a character is shot one episode, they will have a sling in the next. If they lost someone in the last episode, they will spend most of the next getting over it/dealing.
Five. Comedy - this show is as heart breaking as it is funny. The episode 'Some Like It Hot' is legendary, and Paul Gross has fine legs, that's all I'm saying. Mounties. The mounties in due South are just so funny (yeah - don't take that the wrong way.) The singing in 'All The Queen's Horses'. Also, Leslie Nielson.
Firefly
Yeah, I know, pretty much everyone has seen Firefyl haven't they? It still stands though.
For me it beats out Angel and Buffy, it beats Dollhouse as well.
If you haven't seen this show? You need to find someone with the DVDs. If the pilot doesn't grab you? Watch 'Jaynestown'.
One. The characters. They all work wonderfully - they don't all like each other, they don't all hate each other, but they work on it. The progress, even in the short span the show had.
Even now, I find myself hard put to name one character that I don't love.
Two. The setting. it is amazingly detailed and very different than other sci-fi shows. It's gritty and real and draws you in. You want to know more.
Three. Jaynestown. This episode is by turns funny and serious. it is my personnel favourite too *g*
Four. Out Of Gas. An episode that has a tonne of backstory for the main characters, but that gels brilliantly with the story occuring in the present. The writing on this stands out like woah.
Five. It only gets better. The first episodes take a little while to find their feet, but by episode five you're caught and that't that.
Other shows that I love:
Dark Angel - It was only two season and they were two very different seasons in tone, but it was good. Stand out episodes: Hit a Sista Back, The Berrisford Agenda, Borrowed Time
Shows I would love to include in this list:
Tru Calling, it has some brilliant moments, but anyone who has seen the six episodes of season two that exist? You will know why I don't often point people to it. You're given so many questions, so much interesting and you never get answers. Damn fox.
Castle, but season two has yet to air so I can't promise no ass biting. *g*. Season One, however, is worth a ook, if you like humour and crime drama, this may be your show. Plus bonus: good strong female characters and Nathan Fillion.
If you have any shows you want to point me to - point away - I'm always intersted in new shiny things :)
