the british government is stupid
Jan. 1st, 2010 08:18 pmSurprisingly - this is NOT a fandom related post - but I thought, considering the fact that there will be people unaware of this, that I should let peeps know about something.
The British Nimrod squadron is being grounded, it will no longer exist as of thismonth March.
This means that Britain no longer has any long range search and rescue craft - nor do we have any anti-submarine stuff - but the search and rescue bit is much more important.
(I know this on account of the father being an ex-nimrod engineer - he has worked on everyone of the mark 2 nimrods, the ones that are being grounded - and the brother being in airplane photography circles, as photos of the nimrods are going to be 'the thing to get')
We will be getting replacement Nimrods, in 2012.
Yup - that's right, for two whole years, or more likely, three, we will not have any long range search and rescue facilities. There is nothing replacing them, there isn't even anything that can replace them.
This is of the bad.
Oh - and the reason given? Saving funds in order to get more helicopters to the wars, only, those won't be coming until 2013 because we're on the end of the order list.
Yeah. *sighs*
(I'd give you a link to some news articles on it - only there aren't any that I can find that are actually relevant - I'll update when I find some)
Update - it's a footnote in the budget plan apparently
found it: 'In addition, the Nimrod MR2 will be taken out of service in March 2010, 12 months earlier than planned, and the introduction of the Nimrod MRA4 will be delayed until 2012.' - full article here. - Note: It does not mention what this will mean. Got to love politicians.
