Culture and Gender
Nov. 1st, 2015 09:36 pmThis: http://aplaceinthemiddle.org/ - is sooo important. It's about Hawaiian culture and how it has survived - and how in hawaiian culture they recognize a middle gender, not just male and female.
It is so stupidly important. There are so many cultures, marginalized or described as 'primitive' that recognize more than two genders.
I say this as someone who studied archaeology and has to deal with archaeological and anthropological theory and discussions that ignore this or dismiss it. Gender archaeologists are about putting women back into archaeology for the most part, so they never venture into it.
There is legitimately archaeological theory that binary genders rock art. (Prey animals are female and predators are male - and that line and dot is male and that wavy line and two dots is female - seriously.)
It isn't primitive to consider something outside of male or female - it isn't wrong. I hate how much 'primitive' gets used these days. Different cultures, different beliefs, stop telling other people they are wrong for accepting something you refuse to recognize.
Slightly ranty, but I'm not going to apologise ;P - go watch the video, it's really interesting.

And as I write this women are getting threatened for arguing that tampons shouldn't be counted a luxury. :/ *sighs*
