Am a sucker for punishment - lol - also - the next post shall have - behind a cut - just who and what pairing this and 'sometimes' was written for. And as a warning? It's weird *nods* - I blame having a somewhat crazed over worked brain this week....

He can’t think of anything more beautiful than her smile, or the feel of her in his arms at night, but whenever anyone asks he always lies, because she is the one thing that he can keep for himself.

Perna was an echo of her, something that gave him hope in those first few long months away from her, but in the end, he’d hated himself for not saying anything, for not telling the dying woman that it hadn’t been her he’d been seeing, for letting her die thinking that he’d felt the same as she had. But then, he doesn’t think he could have lived with himself if he’d told her either.

Cadman was disappointed when he told her that it couldn’t work between them, but she’d never asked him why and he doubts he would have been able to tell her if she had.

For a while he thought they knew his secret, but then they’d asked him about Cadman and he’d been relieved, making idle excuses, neatly hiding the truth once more. Not even Rodney had noticed the small bruise on his neck.

She’d never been any good at golf he remembered, but he’d never cared, it wasn’t his type of thing; like fishing hadn’t ever been hers, through she would always come with him. He missed those days, when fishing hadn’t just been about the fish. For a moment, he considered telling Rodney, but then he decided against it, not wanting to ruin the moment. He was happy for the other man and seeing him with Katie was almost as good as her being here, with him, in the city that she still dreamed about. Her city of wonders.

She’d be proud, he thinks, that he died doing something noble. That he died having saved a man’s life, against the odds, even through he hates leaving her, he knows she’s in good hands so the pain isn’t quite so bad. He can rest, he thinks, until she joins him, in time.

In time he’ll get to see that beautiful smile again and hold her safe in his arms at night.
