Leverageland Spinoff
Jun. 15th, 2011 11:41 pmChallenge Ten of this round of leverageland was a create a spinoff. Here's my offering (aka the 'stopped before it got too epcially huge a cast' version ;)).

The Premise
It was meant to just be the one job.
When Hardison and his team went missing, his Nana reached out to some of her other kids and asked them to help. All she asked them to do was find Hardison and his team and get them out alive.
The only problem is, as it turns out, they seem to work rather well as a team themselves and it seems a shame to waste a good opportunity.
They each have their own skills, perfect for their chosen task; to hunt down the bad guys and make them pay. Only, unlike the Leverage team, most of the bad guys this team hunts have blood on their hands.
To the world they’re just another group of bounty hunters, earning their money bringing in fugitives, but in reality they aren’t just hunting the bail jumpers, they’re also hunting the ones that couldn’t be touched. The guys who didn’t leave enough evidence behind to convict them.
The team use their skills, and looks, to bait traps, using every con in the book to get the evidence needed to put the bad guys behind bars. Or failing that, to make sure that they’ll never hurt another person.
The Team

April is good with weapons. If it can kill or maim, she knows how it works and how to use it. She’s also considering to be more than a little bit crazy.
In the past she put her skills to good work, offering her services as a security consultant to companies with reputations of dodgy dealings. Always taking one contracts with opposing companies, she would play them off each other for a few months before making them think the threat had passed and moving on to her next set of jobs.
Now, working with her foster siblings, she’s their resident weapons expert and the best of them at handling their more dangerous marks. Partly, or so their uncle claims, because she knows just what buttons to push to cause them to make a mistake.

Matilda hasn’t always been Matilda, though if you were to read her file you wouldn’t know.
Growing up in foster care Matilda was the focus of abuse, because of who she was, until she found her way into Nana’s care. A decade later, with money gifted to her by her adoptive uncle and her brother Hardison’s hacking skills, Matilda confirmed her place in the world.
Matilda is the mastermind of the team. She decides who they hunt and how.
Matilda is good at going unnoticed, a skill she developed as a defence mechanism as a child that has become the basis of her career. Once, she worked as an independent contractor, running surveillance for anyone, from the FBI to international corporations, and now she performs all of the team’s surveillance work, following their marks and learning their habits before deciding on the best way to bring them down.

Cliff has always been good with three things; fixing machinery, languages and making his siblings feel better. The oldest of Nana’s kids, he’s always tried his best to be there for the other kids. Cliff spent seven years in the military, after graduating with degrees in linguistics and engineering.
After leaving the military Cliff tried a few different careers, from translator to car mechanic, but could never settle, until he met Tara Cole. Tara introduced him to the world of grifting, and Cliff was caught. Four years later and he has made a name for himself, if you travel in the right circles.
With most of their marks being guys, Cliff doesn’t get as many chances to work his art as he’d like, though he’s the one who gets them access to most of the information they need. When possible Cliff works his way into the mark’s inner circle, learning as much about them as possible; the rest of the time Cliff acts as the cavalry, riding to the girls rescue whenever needed.

Rachael spent a lot of her childhood on the streets, preferring it to the foster homes that she tended to be placed in, until she met Nana. It took a while for her to warm to the rest of the kids, but now she considers them all her family.
Of the team, she’s the best all-rounder; you don’t survive on the street on thieving skills alone.
Rachael is the one who has the most contact with their marks. If there’s a type the creeps they hunt tend to have in common, its young women, and Rachael is the perfect bait for most traps. It’s a job that Rachael takes a great deal of satisfaction from. There’s nothing like the look that crosses a guy’s face when he realises he’s been conned by a girl.

In another life, Diego could have been a great artist, unfortunately he’s always taken his art teachers too literally when they asked him to do a painting in the style of another painter.
Diego made his fortune selling his copies of the great masters to clueless rich people through dealers. Diego might not have the smarts of some of his siblings, but he knew that as long as no one saw his face, he’d never get caught.
Diego taught Hardison the fine art of ID forging, in the shed out of the back of Nana’s house, though Hardison never listened to Diego’s insistence that they should never use recognisable names. Now Diego crafts identities for Rachael, Cliff and Cassidy, as well as any papers necessary to their play. He’s doing a forensic science degree in his spare time, learning what he needs to perfect his new craft; evidence forging.

Cassi doesn’t have the experience of her elder siblings, but she spent enough time with Hardison when they were growing up to pick up a lot of pointers about hacking.
Cassi spends most of her time on the side-lines, helping Diego and Mai, or hacking into databases for more information or to lay false paper trails, but when there’s a case where Rachael can’t go in alone, Cassi’s the one that goes with her.
Grifting is something that Cassi is still learning, but she’s a good enough actress that she can sell her part when needed. It’ll be a little while before Cliff and April are happy that she’s capable of defending herself against their more dangerous clients, but for the time being she’s happy with her place in the team.
The Support Network

Christina Rossi: Better known as Nana, she started fostering kids when she was in her mid-twenties, and found herself being handed all of the 'problem kids' by the social workers. The thing is, she never saw any of them that way, all they needed was understanding and the right environment to grow. None of her kids are perfect, she knows that, but most of the time their hearts are in the right place.
Nana still lives in the same house she moved into when she was twenty, and she still takes in foster kids, even if few of them are quiet as much trouble as the ones that have already flown the nest. She's the one the team go to when they want a reminder of why they do what they do, or when they need their clothes cleaned, or want to get a decent meal.

Olivia Ivanova: Livia is in her final year of law school, something she's dreamed of since she was a kid and her uncle Dave had brought her law books as presents. She knows that most of her family tend to walk on the shadier side of the law but she doesn't care. Family is family, and she loves them all the same.
She's the one they call when they need legal aid, and she does her best to get them out of whatever sticky situations they manage to get themselves into.
Mai Kennedy: Mai is the team's girl friday, she runs their offices and does her best to make sure their business appears as legit as possible. She's their touchstone, if they're out in the field, she's always there on the other end of the line, making sure they stay safe. Mai is also April's girlfriend, and completely happy with their relationship, despite what most of the world seems to think.
David Rossi: Christina's older brother is the profiling world's version of a rockstar, but he's also a good uncle. He helped Christina out during her illness, spending time with the kids while she was in hospital, and he would have paid her bills, if Hardison hadn't beaten him to it.
He doesn't entirely approve of what the kids do, but every now and again he'll slip them information, sometimes he'll given give them a case.
He's also good for bail money.
Simon Green: Simon was an FBI agent, until he was injured in the field and offered retirement, or a desk job. Now he spends his days hunting fugitives across the US. He and Matilda had a thing for a while, up until the point they both realised that they make better friends. Simon is the guy they call when they need help on some of their more interesting cases.

Alec Hardison: Hardison has his own team now, but he still helps out his family from time to time. Most of his contact is with Cassidy, who still asks him the odd question about hacking and he's never been able to turn down the chance to teach her something new.
Tara Cole: Tara remains something of a mystery, but she owes Cliff, for something neither of them will ever mention, and it's a debt she's keen to repay, as quickly as possible.
The Opposition
Most of the bad guys aren't much trouble once the team catch them and hand them over, but not everyone agrees with their methods, or there efficiency.

Peony Moore: Peony comes from a long line of politicians, and as the eldest of four girls, she feels it's her duty to make her father proud. The only problem, as far as the team are concerned, is that fact that Peony and her family are as dirty as they come. Peony doesn't care how many people get hurt, all she cares about is her own success.
Daniel O'Malley: Daniel is the go to man for a lot of people when they want something done, but don't want to do it themselves. He used to be a fixer, these days he's just the contract holder, and he used to have a long list of people that he could rely on to get the job done. The only problem is, someone keeps catching his people and getting them locked up.
Morris Lincoln: Morris works with the team, on occasion, provided there's something in it for him, but most of the time they're just a nuisance. The head of a militia, Morris isn't a big fan of law enforcement or some laws. The team have gotten his folks in trouble a few times too often for his liking.
James Sterling: It's not often that Sterling crosses the team's path, but when he does it tends to make things a lot more interesting.

One day I will write the cracky crossover where David Rossi is Hardison's Nana, and it will be entirely
badfalcon's fault.
