July 8th-9th
Dec. 20th, 2015 10:21 pmWe had an easier day on the 8th July - spending the morning doing a Hearst Castle tour then driving to Lancaster via Santa Barbara. Then the 9th was driving from Lancaster to Palm Springs, stopping at Calico Ghost Town on route.
I didn't manage to get any good pictures of the inside of Hearst Castle (too dark and no flash allowed - it was a bit surreal for me, the excess level of control of light levels etc in such a relatively new place v. how it is with older stuff in the UK, and what I was taught doing conservation) I got some good pictures of the pretty outside though.
This guy wanted us to feed him - we were sitting looking at the view waiting for our bus to take us up to the 'castle' - it was hot, but it got hotter later in the week!

Pretty tiles (the place is such a mash up of roman/greek/arabic stuffs)

I thought I had taken some pictures of the Mission in Santa Barbara, but can't find them :( - it's pretty and v interesting. I picked up a book on the local tribe as well.
We stayed overnight in Lancaster (almost, but didn't go to the quilt shop there) had our pancake breakfast then headed out.
Calico was our one stop off on the 9th due to the distance. Massively commericalised place that ghost town!

Sadly as the driver I did not manage to take any pictures of the desert landscape, or night time LA from a distance. Or the huge solar and wind farm. It was the first time we had to fuel up (scary, in a 'ok so how does this work here' but we managed - it's interesting the whole pay first then fill up to that amount kinda thing, as someone used to paying after).
