Random meta-y ramble on TV shows and ensemble writing

So, to spare you all, this is going to be behind a cut. Basically, this is going to be me rambling about the shows that I like, and ensembles. The ones that work, the ones that don't; why they work and when they don't. Mainly, these shows are ensemble or focus on two characters.

Shows discussed ,even if only briefly: Andromeda, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Castle, Criminal Minds, Dark Angel, due South, Firefly, Jonathan Creek, Leverage, Numb3rs, Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, Star Trek (all of them ;)), Torchwood, Xena

(note before hand - added now, because I have actually reread - and am paranoid, and don't want this meta/ramble to sound all knowing - it's all my opinion, and what works for me - I know a lot of things don't work for me, but work for other people and vice versa - I am reminded of that a lot when watching stuff with my family.
So, what I say under the cut? It's all my opinion, on what works for me - I may be wrong, you might disagree with me, and that's fine. I just wanted to put this out there. Feel free to throw things at me if you disagree.)

Criminal Minds and a little Doctor Who

Taking a break from my big bang work (not that I really need a break from picspaming topless!sean bean...) to post my reaction to Criminal Minds (6x22) - which is mostly shallow, but partly to do with the case ;)

And because I haven't said anything with regards to Doctor Who, Canton = awesome sauce, there needs to be more Canton. And his last scene in the second episode was PERFECT. Also, I am watching for Rory. I like Amy more now than I did, ditto River and I very much like 11, but Rory is still my favourite *smishes him*.

I didn't like the opener so much (well I adored the opening of the opener, but the episode was a bit o.O) - but I liked part two aka episode two. And, did I mention Canton is awesome? I think I did ;) - I think it may be an interesting season (especially with the split).

spoilers kids, spoilers - only for criminal minds, not Doctor Who, but I couldn't resist )

*sighs*

Doctor Who = o.O (WHY THE HELL DID I WATCH THAT?!?....WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?) - yeah, anyone who has not seen? Be wary.

In the words of the mother: bring on moffat

The Gruffalo on the other hand was good *nods* - and I now have all of Star Trek: The Next Generation on DVD *dances*.

I am now going to go watch the last Merlin episode which I unfortunately missed due to being in London - me thinks it will be a much better way of spending an hour than that was.

*bounces*

So I've seen the new Star Trek film - and I loved it (when I first heard about it I honestly wasn't sure - having now seen it - I loved it *nods*)

Also - I managed to spot Paul Mcgillion straight off \o/ (ma elbowed me because I squealed)

But yeah - LOVED it - seriously *nods*

Now if I could just find a way to go see it again...only this is unlikely *sighs*

Can I haz DVD now?!?

--

Now I just need to get my draft completely done for Tardis big bang and send it to beta - and then decide which of my two started Iona fics I'm going to use for Genderbender big bang

While on the subject - anyone willing to do a read through check for canon mistakes etc on my Tardis fic? Much love to by lovely beta *huggles* but it's been a little while since she watched Torchwood as she's been focused on her own works in another fandom *cough* SPN *cough*

Also - is anyone familiar with Torchwood, Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures? I need someone to help me poke one of the Iona fics so it works and it involves the canon of all three *blushes*

squee

*coughs*
Am back home - have been since sunday evening now - it's a relief- even if it does mean being attacked by multiple animals at odd moments *g* the puppy is still insane and there is still a weird battle for dominance going on between the cats....and the new fish are....odd.

Anyhoo - am all excited about Doctor Who this weekend - especially with the upcoming return of CJH!!! *muffled squee*

I have one little question for you all - who would you cast as a mini-Daniel (Jackson - SG-1) ??

Ah me

Am feeling slightly insane in the face of fic!! (I keep getting tempted by challenges and then having to remind myself that I have HiPS, three and the present 'episodes' of Stargate Pegasus, the next immortals and my remaining 98 crossovers to do *g*)

Anyhoo - BF is coming on well *fingers crossed for the friday post*

In other news I now have Singstar (and two hours were well spent being idiots with it) - which is sadly addictive - I have 'Legends' and 'Party' - now want to get '80's' and 'rocks'...

And doctor who *meep* - Here follows my review - which is completely my own opinion - not that of anyone else

spoilers behind here - Human Nature - episode eight of New s3 )

Huh

Only a few more days to go now - then - Doctor Who!! *squee*
In the mean time I'm writing, occasionally, when I'm not cursing my lack of a printer or rather ink (it's lost in the post somewhere...apparently) - and am re-reading the few Redwall books I have with me - I dealt with Redwall in my insomniac state saturday night into sunday - started Matthimeo then decided I wanted to read Martin the Warrior more -lol
But yes - those books?? sooooo good - or at least the early ones - the more recent haven't been as good. Am slowing in the reading of MTW cos I'm near the end and the end always makes me cry *g*
Martin = always my favourite character - Laterose = very close second, more to only being in the one book than anything else. I also have to admit that it was Matthias who dragged me into this series. *nods* Now if I only had more than four of them with me.....may wind up reading some of the new untouched, always meant to read books...we shall see

House and Shark tomorrow (with attempted cooking of chinese by myself and [livejournal.com profile] charlies_dragon ) yay!

I am the law *giggles*

You know

I don't think the internet, or rather the increased availability of the internet has helped fandom....
Stargate fandom is kinda a scary place at the moment - scarier than it was just a year ago - hell you could say it's scarier than it was two months ago. Some of it's because, yeah, some bad and potentially bad decisions have been made (i.e. outright lying to fans) but really people, do you have to, well, implode is the best description (as are certain parts of the DW fandom...)
Yes - there are certain people who shall remain unnamed - who have started to p me off something awful, but that seems to be the aim now *rolls eyes* why be nice to the fans when you can insight so many of them to such levels?? - but we could ignore them and allow people to have their own opinions. The hate/love is on such an insane level now and it kinda makes me edge even closer to the edge than I was before, when really right now, I was wanting to venture further in *sighs*
I'll admit there are bits of fandom that I have always avoided (INCEST?!?) and there are shows I love, but will never ever venture into the fandom of, because, I think they eat people....
So yeah - the prior to the heavy internet presence fandom was a calmer place and those fandoms that started out as such remain so,(i.e. Star trek, Babylon 5), for the most part - but the more recent fandoms - just - meep.
I think I'll remain where I am - away from the crazed Rose fans/shippers and the lemmings etc - and look forward to next saturday (Smith and Jones!! *squee*) without having to avoid the Martha (who we haven't even met yet people!) hate. *sighs*

a moment of squee

as I rub my hands together and anticipate the arrival of two tapes (full of CSI and NCIS - from the good mother) and 3 CDs - also in the face of the news of when House is going to start on Five and the upcoming Doctor Who episodes.

Will be posting a mix (the last two songs I've needed being on the CDs being sent) which I have been working on since just before I created the [profile] carson_daniel comm, soon, most likely wednesday - as that gives me times to figure out uploading and such - may be posted the prologue and P1 of the Carson/Daniel fic - but as P2 seems to be going to Hell in a handbasket...may wait until I've battled through that. Just to be sure. *g*

Also - I have four assignments to do *meep* One for the 12th, three for the 19th, one of which that should be easy, but isn't - i.e. a more or less final, this is the subject of my dissertation form which needs to be signed by whoever says they'll oversee my craziness.....which means no last minute decisions. Lol.
So yeah - am going to be slightly busy in a non-fandom way for a little while....

am feeling very british

this is what happens when i go hunting for Doctor Who fan fiction online. I start spotting the american writers, and blinking in slight confusion at the things that appear from time to time. It happens when i'm readin SGA fics with Carson in as well through, when people over accent or they write him with what could be a welsh, irish or cornish accent, but not scottish. Hell there was one that Carson's speech reminded me of when i was struggling through the accent in 'the secret garden' back in primary school (i got a little cocky, thinking i'd understand it easily. *head desk*), this is a very scary thing *nods*.
But then i keep getting thrown by my american lecturer whenever he refers to the west country as the south-west peninsular, which i guess is a very british thing to get confused by - lol.
The odd thing is, torchwood fic doesn't seem to carry the same issues as the doctor who ones, or at least, not that i've seen so far.
the thing that confused me most today was someone's use of teacakes...that were being handed out and put in people's pockets. *blinks* i love teacakes, but i would never put one in my pocket. Hell most won't fit. *pauses, getting the sudden urge to have a teacake, all hot and buttery....* It's not a big thing, not even a huge thing, and it doesn't effect the fic at all, it just throws me for a second as i try to figure out the logistics in my head.
not being american however - i don't know if there are similar moments when peeps like me try to write things set in america involving american people - i can only really comment on what i know myself!!
also - am slightly depressed, having failed to find cheeselets ANYWHERE (xmas without Cheeselets - it's wrong!) and as i had my contract at work extended, but it's only two weeks, and i'm going home at the beginning of those two weeks, so i have to decline the offer, (or get fired for being a pain in the ass) and am really really really nervous and guilty about it *sighs* am useless, but i want to see the mob again. Especially now that a certain husky puppy had taken it upon herself to start barking at the phone everytime i phone and seemingly at no other point.
Oh well such is life. lol.

Still here..lol

Been, kinda revising for Themes tomo (human evolutiony stuff) - we watched tapes from the library - including two eps of walking with caveman *sniggers*, apparently life is all about sex, which is all about tea *nods* explains many things so it does. Also - if anything crappy happens? we can blame Robert Winston. Yup. Lol - GPS powered timemachine get you nowhere - cos it requires satellites. but the 80s would be interesting...
Am considering ways to get back at Dave - am now at the point where my voice keeps giving out, and am wondering what i'm going to do if it happens while i'm talking to the parents tomo. Hanging up would be a very bad, but very possibly the only option. *head desk*
Have posted loan forms.fingers crossed they get there in time. I mean the deadlines friday - but Royal Mail - um, trusting them isn't always a good plan.
second part of doctor who - was watched - spoilers for ep...possibly )
