SGA Spoilers ahead (s3.17 onwards) - so cover you eyes....*coughs* don't click on the cut. Ranting, sobbing and muttering ahead.
Just watched 'Sunday', and yes, it was on YouTube, sadly, as I'm one of those people in this country who has never had sky, and most likely won't have it for a while - lack of money - BUT I want to see SGA sooner rather than later, because, for anyone who's wondering, Season two of SGA still hasn't been on 'normal' TV, and it's only recently been released on DVD, and again, that's money i don't have. So therefore, internet is my only option.
Anyhoo back to the reaction - which - mainly was - WOW. Not a completely good wow. The episode was good, not without faults (there may have been a little more nitpicking than normal - but comeon, if you're going to kill someone, kill them WELL) - and I CRIED. God did i cry. But then, watching my favourite Character die, like that, i was bound to be crying.
Yes - it was a good episode, but again, not while i was watching it because, really, i wasn't thinking too much, this is another of the episodes that gave me yet another Deja vu moment. It may not have been as bad as 'Progeny', or some of the others recently, but it was there. And that just makes me a little mad.
The episode was good, in that we learned about the characters, Lorne and his mum painting, Zelenka and the chess club, Rodney and Brown (ignore the suggested T/J - I'm a Ronon/Teyla girl, allllll the way.), Carson fishing (very scottish - as is golf...ish) *sobs*, Elizabeth and Mike. And John and Ronon - John's been married before??
That was nice. BUT at the same time, JESUS, did they have to give so many people a reason to feel guilty??? I mean comeon??
Before anyone thinks, ah yeah but in real life.... I've been there. I've done the real life bit. I don't need people reminding/correcting me about it. The fact is, TV is the escape from real life, and at the same time, when they try to imitate real life, as people have been saying about this episode, they seem to go a bit too far while at the same time ignoring some key bits of the real life bit. Which makes the comments about real life all the more annoying.
Carson's death. It was sad. It was dramatic. It was heart wrenching. I cried. Harder than during the Torchwood finale. But, it was wrong. In my gut it was just wrong. Yeah, i know, that's because he died. But it's not just that. I can't put my finger on it, but there was something else there.
Also - both of us who were watching went anti during the memorial, 'it gives me great comfort' - that was soooo not right, nor a weir thing to say. Don't ask why, it just was. Also, i know they were giving a military send-off to carson, but the bagpipes should have been used for amazing grace or danny boy, why? because the scots (through I know the majority hate the damn things) and their bagpipes have traditions. And for carson, they would have fit. Then again, that would have been at his funeral, doubtless, it was just a little, meh.
David?? Acted his little heart out *hugs* - he was SOOOOOO good in that episode. Soooo good.
That end scene?? My Carson/Daniel bunnies, dear lord. Also, some denial some not. I had a Evy/Rodney interaction thing in my head - but as they aren't in line with Stargate yet, so i can't write them, because, what's daniel doing?? *meep*
Also - i like the way Rodney deals in this episode - but - i say but - if he turns dark because of this?? GRRRR!!! It will erase every inch of character development and that, is truely tragic. And what would be worse? It would make Carson's death all about that (like Janet's, in heroes, how long was it that they thought it was Jack?!?) and that, would be so wrong. especially as the character of Carson, being the reason that Rodney goes dark, that would break me, truly it would, because that it a piss poor memorial to such a character. And it would be far too like more recent events in the real world.
No one, when they die, wants there death to become the reason why others go off to kill, or to war.
OK - now...for the nit picks.
Welll - Lorne - he's a marine - BUT, somehow, he was wearing an AIR FORCE uniform at the end, with wings?? - WTF??
Daedalus crew members, but no Caldwell (where the hell did he go exactly??) OR Cadman. very weird and disturbing.
There are more, involving the medical side of things, the explanations given, then oddly changed/not the same later. But, it's just a bit much to say. Especially following THAT particular episode.
The one, overriding thing for me, has been how much of a rollercoaster the last two days have been, the stress over the a dog's breakfast tickets and then watching this. And seeing that the producers LIED to us. I felt bloody well betrayed, he DIED, how is that disappearing?? How can he come back from that?? How can he come back from that it, it not make it weird??
What is it with them and the kill the doctor's thing - Doctor's aren't the only ones who can be heroes people.
And, as someone who was brought up, until my 11/12 birthday, with the air force, my da being one of the techies (non-officer engineers, the ones who take apart and put back together the planes, fix any problems etc) who got along well with a lot of pilots, (some of whom, i know, are no longer with us, god rest their souls, and one, at least, who didn't even die in his plane, he died in a stupid accident), i find it VERY annoying that this is the SECOND time that a doctor has died. They are most often, these days, the best defended people, so in fact, a lot of the time, while they're the ones most willing to put their lives on the line to help someone, there's always someone there to help them do that.
But still ignoring that, SGA, has a habit of only killing/getting rid of MAJOR characters (or people who should be major characters), not recurring characters versus, SG-1, who lost a number of the recurring characters. And yet, people STILL felt that SGA needed this. *blinks* Yes, they needed a deeply emotional, touching episode, but a character death is FAR from the only way of doing that. FAR. Hell, a near-death ep carries more, it's a wake up call - but then, the writers have never done anything like that - having characters taking more than a few days/weeks to get better? Not likely to happen. And, that, is stupid.
One of the MOST striking scenes in Babylon 5, was with Susan, lying in the bed, unable to move, and slowly dying of her injuries, and then, Marcus - yeah i know, it was character death, but it wasn't SG-1 or SGA style character death. It was very real through. And all the more moving for it, sticking with you AND the characters.
Carson could sooooo easily have been a little further from the explosion, and suffered major burns to his back, and had to face the recovery from that, instead of having to die. And that would have gotten just as big an emotional response as killing him, and it would have been DIFFERENT. Too many times they've had to fall to character deaths. Too many times they've thrown 'nobody really dies in sci-fi at us'. This is something that, as far as i can remember, or have experienced, has NEVER been done by any other sci-fi show or it's writers. Why? Because we know it's sci-fi, but we don't need the fact thrown in our faces over and over just as a way to silence us/reassure us. Just like we really don't need another time travel thing, thank you very much. The past few have been just enough for us.
The writers have been at this for too long. And it's starting to show. 'Progeny' is the clearest sign of this, because when you start repeating YOURSELF, you know it's time to hand it over to someone else. Let alone when you start to recycle ideas left right and centre.
I respect them, because yes, they've done well, but at the same time, even they have got to realise that maybe, they should have had a whole new group of writers for atlantis, because not only would it have relieved them from the stress of two shows in the one writing circle, that they have been going on about recently, but it would also have prevented the repeats and, it would have allowed them to actually use all of their characters and develop them to their full potential.
I'm going to watch to the end of Season 3, but, season 4.....without weir or carson? It's very doubtful. Because without Carson, it's Weir who i look to for his role, without Weir, well Teyla is the closest, BUT she's so under developed it's laughable. So basically, I won't have any character to whom i can equate, as much as i love Rodney. Without Carson, it's going to be very interesting.
And no, Carter's addition won't do anything for me, apart from maybe drive me to breaking things, she is not the same character i fell in love with. She's lost a lot of the strength, and of all the SG-1 lot, for me, she belongs the least in SGA. Sam, has her moments in S10, but she still lacks a lot of what she used to be. And that is truly sad.
Well that's more of less it for now - sorry if i repeated myself, this was pretty much just a reaction post.
Rest in peace Carson Beckett - canon may have killed you in a way that makes any return doubtful (short of timetravel *head desk*) but fandom will always have a place for you xxx
