weaselett: (dw - donna awesome)

Ok - so I watched this ep (having watched the first part last week on IPlayer cos ma got her wires crossed and didn't record it for us while we were in the car coming up from Bournemouth.) and I just had to get a few of my thoughts about it out.

Okay - so these being Moffatt episodes I was all excited and hopeful (cos - while I didn't love Girl in the Fireplace - it was still damn good - and the s1 two part and blink are battling for a place as my very favourite eps) - but sadly, this wasn't as good.

Donna has got to be my favourite 'new who' companion so far - so it was nice to see her written well in both parts - even if she kinda drifted to the edge in relation to storyline.

There were a lot of interesting ideas in these episodes - unfortunately I think there were TOO many. River Song on her own would have been interesting to explore - ditto the vash nervada (however you spell it - bad fan girl I am not looking it up) - and CAL. Unfortunately it didn't seem to gel all too well in the end - too rushed? not enough time to fit them all together? I'm not sure.

Also - I guessed pretty much all of the plot twists before we got very far in. Had guessed some last episode.

Not sure about River Song - she was interesting - but I couldn't like her. Nothing she did made me like her. Oh well. (also - as soon as I heard the name my brain went - Tam? Soong? - and created some weird image of a melded version of Noonien Soong and River Tam.....*wants someone to write a crossover with River Tam/Data interaction*)

Also - I do NOT want to know the Doctor's name. I will stick my fingers in my ears and sing if I have to.

I liked the first part better - (the line used to title this entry being the best line of the episodes for both me and for ma - who was rather smug when she told me me about her reaction to hearing it *g*)

I would have been happier with it if River had died (just like I would have been happier if Astrid had died died in the christmas ep) - why is it so easy for people (well - not moffatt) in New Who to kill as many people as they want (god only knows what the current number is) but companions they don't kill. They get stuck somewhere or they go off.
Old school companions died from time to time (ok - not too often - but still - it DID happen).
Personally - I always feel that being brought back cheapens deaths like River's - deaths are meant to mean something (like they did in Babylon 5 *looks dreamy*) especially in shows like this were so much emotion is put into them. I do wonder if some of this ep was coloured by what needed to be included to work for the finale.

I get it though - it's moffatt - everybody lives *yay*

It was a shame though - but not terrible.

It wasn't the worst episode of new Who. It wasn't the best either though.

Dad is amazingly disappointed (ma's words not mine) - he loved Blink and the other eps - and we had a convo just the other weekend about Moffatt taking over and what it'll mean (da has HATED a lot of Davies' eps - espec last seasons finale - he looked a little dreamy talking about the old school master - who he liked - and he liked John Simm in LoM) - so not sure he'll be bothering much with DW for a little while. Oh Well.
