Okay - so the parental visit to shropshire (am soooo annoyed i didn't manage to find a way to go too) turned up something interesting

Now the officially most supported by history and sites arthur theory belongs to shropshire. (The da and I have long debated and searched down this stuff - so it's all from long discussion and examination of evidence as well as site visitation - and yes - we are that sad - be thankful you don't have to visit place with us *g* lol)

OK - so I admit, ever since visiting Glastonbury I have fully engaged in my belief that it was Avalon. There are number of factors to it - not just because it's never worked in my head *g* - including the fact that the theory comes from things said my the monks in the Abbey. And the fact that from that Avalon would be the Abbey, not the Tor as everyone thinks.

However - there are a number of places that I would consider to be fair guesses at the possible Avalon locations - most of which have been known as isles of the dead at some point.
The front two runners for me are the Isles of Scilly (known as the Isle of the dead due to the fact that when people lived there, they lived in the lowlands, the area that is now sea, and buried there dead on the hills - therefore, all that you can see/find easily nowadays tends to be the burial monuments) and Anglesey (which has a lot of burial evidence on it.)
They are also both in the best locations when you consider the best theories (Arthur fought a battle at badden (my spelling may be poo) which is near Bath...and is the one battle which we have a set location for.) So the more southern possible Arthur's seem more realistic.
The other place that we have considered - and to the list - are the farn islands, a long way from the battles, but if you follow the theory that Arthur was a warlord from the no man's land between the two roman walls then the Farn Islands (Lindsfarn in particular) are the better theory for Avalon.

However - this new - and amazingly well thought out Arthur theory we have come across (well the da did - but he has the book - so I will steal and read) includes and considers a lot of the evidence that does exist, unlike most of the others, which always end up being kind of vague. It does not however, suggest a possible location for Avalon.
It places Camelot as being at Wroxeter - where the remains of the roman fort have the remains of a saxon hall within them - in other words, they reused the roman site - and considering the size of the place - yeah - that would be a big ass camelot
Also - this theory takes Arthur's son into consideration - and above the roman fort, on the hill is a hill fort - which was reused - the theory being, arthur's son (who's name, I can't for the life of me remember right now *g*) used and defended when he abandoned Camelot.

There's a lot more to the theory then this - but basically they have a lot of sites - and a lot of evidence to support it. There's even a site (which is on the border between England and Wales) where King's are said to have drawn their swords from the stone. It's a stone circle which is still, at least in part, standing and has a collection of others monuments around it. And it's not far from Wroxeter (or at least this is the impression given to me by the da - however - i shall stand corrected if i'm wrong - however - it seems to be one of the few theories that includes a site that seems reasonable for this.)

It also fits for a wandering warlord style king arthur - with the known battle close enough for it not to be so unbelievable as it is for the northern arthur.

Also - through it does not name an Avalon - the da and I discussed - and while this theory could still use Glastonbury, it could also use the more likely Anglesey - OR a new possible site in the form of a certain other location. The severn river isn't far from a number of the sites mentioned, therefore any of the islands in the Bristol Channel could easily be Avalon.

So a very new interesting theory for me to chase up fully at some point.
