Am still behind on my Nanowrimo word count (to the point that I'm refusing to update my word count on the site until I get at least 15,000 words done *g*)- I blame uni though *g*
Have just gotten back from a trip to see my supervisor (during and following which there was mocking of my friend who came with - Orkney isn't one of those places you want to visit in the New Year - unless you're used to the harsher weather up there - which said friend from south-east england isn't).
Yesterday was my first field trip of the year - Oxford - and as I'm now up to 'The Amber Spyglass' in the His Dark Materials sequence I spent a little bit more of my time hunting for things mentioned in 'The Subtle Knife' than considering how the human remains were displayed and how I'd do it myself (Part of my studies this year is Collections Care and Management - so much ethics discussion and museums stuff)
The Ashmolean (which we all visited in our lunch break) is like most museums - but seems more empty somehow *g* - whereas the Pitt Rivers Museum is like one of those tiny antique shops - there cases hidden under cases, draws to open, things on top of cases, things hanging between floors - it's also really dark (had a glass roof - but to protect the collections its been covered) most people were using torches to see things, but none of us had one *g*
Was mildly disappointed to discover that the skulls Lyra sees in 'The Subtle Knife' aren't on display/there anymore - but for the Harry
Potter peeps the shrunken heads were still around (which I really don't like - I'm weird about human remains as it is - shrunken heads + weasel = hiding head in
trowel_queen's back and muttering oaths.
There's a mummy in there as well - with all of it's coffins. Overall - it's a very eclectic mix of stuff - from very modern to very ancient
from throughout the world (some of which having been looted as the education curator freely admitted - though I guess the burn marks
give it away *g*)
The Pitt Rivers Museum is attached the University AND the science museum (which we all spent more time in *g*) - where they have the remains of what was the only complete Dodo skeleton (someone threw it on a fire at some point - don't ask me why - but someone managed to save the feet and head...) and lots of dinosaurs, rocks and animals.
So am interesting day was had (with the added bonus of friends squeeing over spotting the 'spot where Morse died OMG!' and the enormous amount of bikes that seem to have conquered Oxford), even if I feel asleep in an uncomfortable crowded mini-bus on the way back and have a really sore neck as a result (2 1/2 hours in a minibus - 4 1/2 hours there and back *nargh*)
Am close to having reliable internet now (she says having typed this entry in notepad prior to posting once internet came back *g*)
*crosses fingers....and toes* so should be around a bit more.
