Criminal Minds
HUGE EPIC SPOILERS behind the cut - so if you haven't seen season six episode 18 of criminal minds, don't click.
OK, so I didn't like the episode. The directing was good *pets MGG*, but I am hard put to think of a second part of a two parter that was written so badly as a second part. There were bits missing at the beginning (it's like there's five minutes, during which they realize that Prentiss is gone are missing, and it jumps in afterwards). And the pacing just, it was slow and a bit clunky, and I just didn't feel the emotional tension. Normally I cry like a baby when characters die (I swear, the woman in the flat downstairs thought I was dying when I watched 'Sunday' - and my mother mocked me often for my reaction to 'Hero' - and I still tear up when watched the end of the first episode of season three of due South), this time, nope. Nothing.
(ok so I lied - here's another edit - I know there are people who liked this episode and think it was awesome, and honestly I am happy that there are people who did *smishes them*, I have friends who love things that I don't and vice versa, but if you want to defriend me because I didn't like this episode, that's ok)
The writing just wasn't tight enough - though I think the direction and the way they choose to take the script helped the episode a lot. That said, it still felt like a Nikita or Covert Affairs episode than a Criminal Minds one.
I don't like the fact they keep inventing new things for characters, just to fit them into this storyline - JJ, when did she become a terrorism specialist? Did she do that in her six months at her new job? (with what Hotch said, I was actually expecting Jordan Todd, because, you know, she was the counter terrorist girl, but then poor Jordan doesn't get mentioned anymore).
Yes it was nice to see JJ, but all the spy stuff? I just *waves hands* - I like the version I've seen that JJ is now working for the SGC *coughs*. Also, how is JJ's family better off now if she's a spy handler? I mean she was apparently in Paris in that last scene.
Also - Emily's reference to join the FBI came from Clyde? (ignoring the fact this goes against canon, the whole thing kinda replaces early canon) How did this not make them connect Emily to Doyle sooner, as they seem to have known that Doyle and Clyde were connected?
Hotch, almost got his awesome on, then didn't, though he had some fun ('I thought you were a better profiler than that'). Also, Clyde didn't stick around to see Doyle dead? Bad SIS bloke (JJ said SIS, I have no idea what SIS is....though google tells me that's MI6 - which explains things, someone needs to ask Clyde if he left his laptop on a train).
Ashley, well she got to attempt to be awesome, but it was kinda badly written. *sighs*
I can not speak to any of the stuff they said about Doyle (Ian is a Protestant name? I have never heard this, but then it's not something that comes up, ditto the weird ring things. I would google them, but even then it might not be true. I have to admit though, my brain automatically went 'so if he'd been welsh she would have had to try and flush a love spoon?').
Emily - I actually have no idea what to say - she had some awesome moments, but I didn't glee over it like I used to when she was awesome - I liked the way her scenes were shot - and the way she clearly has focus, and that she beat Doyle (with a stake, then got staked *winces*) - the back story was interesting, but I had distinct moments of 'when did she...' (where did her automatic weapon appear from? - how did Garcia not track her phone, and where did said phone go?) - so, it wasn't a terrible episode for her 'last'.
(I keep editing this because I keep thinking of stuff, this is the last edit, I swear *g* - how did Doyle get out of DC? it had been shut down....and what happened to that storm.....o.O)
Rossi and Morgan had good stuff this ep, and the writers are trying to break Garcia again. Yes Morgan was a bit OTT with his reaction, but it was very Morgan (with his trust issues). Rossi was a bit flat/slow at times (he's the original!BAU people, and had mob associations *coughs*) but he had more good moments. I honestly don't want to know what the next ep will be like atmosphere wise, plus, now the BAU needs another new profiler. Can we have an older red head woman please (they could steal Megan Reeves, that would be good ;))? OR can we have Katie (the ex-BAU girl who runs the child crime unit?) for an episode again?
(and there was an Elizabeth Moon quote - she must be in a very happy place now *g*)
I saw the ending coming (it follows the rule I have, that if you don't actually see the character dead, or see them die in a way there is no coming back from, then likelihood is they aren't dead/are now in character storage). I almost cried, I will admit that, but that's because of Hotch (sneaky!hotch, and JJ) and yes, I can lip read well enough to know what was said. It was sad in that the others all broke down and Hotch had his stoic on *pets him*. But at the same time? Why did none of them twig to them not getting to see the body.
I am actually MORE annoyed about the fact that with all the attempted build up (I didn't get the tension, at any point, the pacing just didn't work for me) Doyle got away. So you know, Doyle is still out there (and if they don't pick Emily up again, I'm guessing the both of them will always be out there).
Also, if Doyle is a smart man, he would have checked the coffin, or would use ground penetrating radar (though that would be seriously unsubtle *g* - but then grave robbing, also unsubtle, unless done soon enough post burial). Because you know, Lauren Reynolds died as well.
There was absolutely no pay off to this storyline. It just ended. I like long storylines that end with some kind of payoff. Like the bad guy dying. Or one of the good guys going on an angry revenge rampage. I can't see how there can be a pay off after this. Also, if the others find out that Hotch knows (though, again, they all fail as profilers for not noticing, I mean, the man had to shut himself in his office after saying goodbye to JJ), he is going to be in so much trouble.
And....going back to my list that I posted on the end of my reaction to 6x17:
-Emily did not have Doyle's baby, but there was a child involved and she did take said child from him - so that's one point
-Yup, Emily ran away (to Boston - why do all the bad things always happen in Boston in CM?)
-And Emily and Doyle did fight it out and try to kill each other - and both failed - that's three
- Emily vanished and died (and ended up in hospital- the end of that ep must have been at least three weeks later...cos you know, stomach wound and pressured cabin? likely not the best plan), so a combination of a and c (with added 'it's a random dark haired woman to whom JJ is talking and we won't show you her face, so we can later fudge it and say it was the foster mother, not Emily, if we so want)
-They figured out something was wrong, but it took a little while (and Hotch finding her stuff in a drawer - I'm not sure if I can be bothered to rewatch the last ep to see if we saw her put them there...)
The rest of my points can't be reviewed until the end of the season, but yeah, that's 4 and a half out of 5.
Well I guess I'll just have to see how the season goes from here (I'll still watch - I'm shallow and Hotch and Garcia are pretty. And I still like Rossi. And Reid and Morgan. And I want to see where they go with Seaver now. Because they now have one less character to write for, so I can hope that the new writers can manage ensemble writing better when it's only for six.....)
