Daniel squeezed his mom’s hand encouragingly, glancing sideways at his grams, hardly believing that she had actually known that he was her grandson all along. She had never actually said those exact words it had been pretty clear what she had meant, but that didn’t matter. All that mattered was that they helped his mom through the labour and whatever she needed to do afterwards.

Daniel watched out of the corner of his eye as his mom’s ‘boyfriend’ entered the room, kneeling on the other side of his mother, kissing her softly on the forehead as he ran a hand through her hair soothingly, something he could never remember his father ever doing. His mom tightening her grip on his hand brought his attention back to her face, offering her a small smile as he squeezed back, before glancing towards his grams, not knowing what more he could do to help his mom. He watched mutely as the aging woman casually rolled up her long sleeves, gently pushing his mom’s legs further apart and examining something he couldn’t see.

He didn’t like seeing his mom in so much pain, even through he knew that this was a different kind of pain. That it was just a part of a new life coming into the world, just like the woman in Egypt who had given birth during one of the many digs he’d been taken on, his mom was battling to bring another new life into the world. Soon enough he would have another sister to love and protect, who would look up to him as her big brother and ask him silly questions about everything that he’d have to find answers to, but wouldn’t mind, it was what he was supposed to do.

He winced as his mom cried out in pain, leaning forward to whisper whatever words of comfort he could think of in his mom’s ear, just like he did whenever one of the girls hurt themselves, knowing that it did not really matter what he said as long as his mom knew he was there with her. Daniel ignored the weird smells that accompanied his mom’s hard work, just like he’d been taught to ignore the bitter smells of newly unearthed ancient artefacts, the smell of the long dead mummies that he’d only ever seen in museums and the rank smell of the toilet pit in the midday sun. Compared to most things he’d smelt, it wasn’t really that bad, but it smelt funny all the same and he couldn’t help but hope that it was gone soon and that his new baby sister would be in their mom’s arms where she belonged. Glancing back towards his grams he realised she was finally encouraging his mom to push, grinning he squeezed his mom’s hand encouragingly, meeting her gaze for a moment as she fought against the pain to offer him a smile of her own. He heard his mom’s boyfriend laugh faintly as his grams announced happily that she could see the head, surprised by the happiness in the sound and how different the man was from what he remembered of his father. He couldn’t help but wonder, for a moment, if his dad had been like that once. He found himself staring across his mother at his sister’s father delighted at the idea that at least one of his sisters would grow up with a father who loved her.

The sound of a baby’s first gasping cries snapped his head around, his eyes widening as he took his first look at his littlest sister, squirming in their grandmother’s arms as she gently towelled the little girl off.

He grinned watching as his mom took her new daughter into her arms, a few stray tears running down her cheeks, as she smiled softly, the picture of the proud mother.
